Delegates applaud President Truman as he accepts the Democratic nomination in Philadelphia. Hubert Humphrey delivered a spellbinding speech at the convention, saying "the time has arrived for the Democratic Party to get out of the shadow of states' rights and walk forthrightly into the bright sunshine of human rights." His speech helped convince his party to adopt a strong civil rights plank, causing the entire Mississippi delegation and half of Alabama's delegation to walk out. Truman went on to defeat Tom Dewey in the general election.
