Kurds in Turkey are represented by the guerrilla group KADEK, the next generation of leader Abdullah Ocalan's Marxist Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK). The PKK had engaged in 25 years of separatist battle which claimed more that 30,000 lives, and the European Union has labeled it a terrorist organization. Ocalan, who was arrested in 1999, has called on his followers to drop their guns in favor of diplomacy, and the KADEK has largely complied.
