Fe Maria, who has lived 13 years with HIV, hugs her son, who was infected at birth 12 years ago. On the phone is Dr. Soto, who is examining some retroviral AIDS medications, in the Robert Reid Childrens Hospital in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. A new clinical trial - the first of its kind in the Dominican Republic - means she can finally get the drugs she needs so she can continue to take care of her son. "It's hard here," she says. "No one helps you here if you have this disease. It's hard enough being sick, but watching your child get sick, and not being able to help him, it's very hard." |
