With the AIDS pandemic sweeping across Africa, thousands of medical and social service professionals gathered in the South African city of Durban, for the 13th International AIDS Conference. The week-long conference opened on July 9. Former South Africa's President Nelson Mandela called for the government to adopt a policy to prevent mother-to-child transmission of the AIDS virus, a topic that has brought South Africa under a crush of international criticism.
