A pair of cow elk stand in a river as flames light up the hillside behind them near Sula, Mont. Nationwide it was one of the worst fire seasons in history beginning on Jan. 1, in Florida. By year's end, there were more than 92,000 different fires, consuming more than 7 million acres, with 30,000 people fighting the flames at a cost of more than $1.6 billion.
