Paul Newman, the Academy-Award winning superstar who personified cool as an activist, race car driver, popcorn impresario and the anti-hero of such films as "Hud," "Cool Hand Luke," died Sept. 26, 2008, at his home in Westport, Conn. Among the others who died this year were George Carlin, Odetta, Bo Diddley, Charlton Heston, Suzanne Pleshette, Levi Stubbs, Sydney Pollack, Tim Russert and Yves Saint-Laurent.
