Vatican Swiss Guard are seen at the Vatican, Tuesday, May 6, 2008, at a ceremony held each May 6 to commemorate the day in 1527 when 147 Swiss Guards died protecting Pope Clement VII. Almost the entire guard was massacred by Imperial troops of the Holy Roman Empire on the steps of St. Peter's Basilica, but their bravery ensured that Clement VII escaped to safety.
