The associate justice of the U.S. Supreme Court was No. 20 on the Forbes list. Born in New York in 1933, she was educated at Cornell, Harvard and Columbia Universities and served as a law professor at Rutgers and Columbia before embarking on a judicial career. She was appointed to the high court in 1993 by President Clinton.
