Major Attacks In Britain

Great Britain has been the target of terrorists (both Islamic and Irish Catholic) for decades. Here is a look at major attacks on that country in the last 35 years.

March 8, 1973

Two car bombs explode outside Old Bailey courthouse and the government's agriculture department headquarters in London. One person is killed and more than 150 are wounded. Reports blame the blast on Irish Republican Army operatives.

Oct. 5, 1974

In another attack attributed to the Irish Republican Army, two bombs explode in pubs in the London suburb of Guildford, killing five people and injuring more than 50 others.

Nov. 21, 1974

Two bombs that explode in Birmingham kill 19 people and wound more than 180 others. This, too, is blamed on the IRA.

July 20, 1982

Two bombs in Hyde Park and Regent's Park in London claim the lives of 11 British soldiers. More than 40 others, mostly civilian onlookers, are wounded. The blasts are linked to the IRA.

Dec. 17, 1983

In the middle of the busy Christmas shopping season, a car bomb explodes outside Harrod's department store. Six people are killed and some 100 others are wounded. The blast is blamed on the IRA.

Oct. 12, 1984

Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher narrowly escapes when an IRA attack targets the Conference of ruling Conservative Party. Five people are killed and 24 are wounded.

Sept. 22, 1989

Ten British soldiers are killed when an IRA bomb goes off at the Royal Marines School of Music in Deal. Another 30 people are wounded.

Feb. 7, 1991

Three homemade mortar shells are fired at No. 10 Downing Street, the British prime minister's official residence in London. No injuries are reported and the attack is blamed on the IRA.

April 10, 1992

A massive truck bomb targets London's financial district, causing hundreds of millions of dollars in damage. Three people are killed. The attack is attributed to the IRA.

March 20, 1993

A bomb hidden in a garbage can in a shopping district of Warrington, northwest England, kills two boys, ages 3 and 12. The attack is blamed on IRA.

April 24, 1993

An IRA truck bomb targets London's financial district. Only one person is killed but the bomb causes heavy and extensive damage.

Feb. 9, 1996

A third massive truck bomb in London's financial district, killing two people. The blast is blamed on the IRA.

Feb. 18, 1996

In what appears to be a stepped-up IRA offensive, a suicide bomber kills himself aboard a London double-decker bus. Five others are injured.

June 15, 1996

A massive truck bomb targets Manchester in the country's northwest area. A central shopping area is wrecked and 200 people are wounded. The blast is blamed on the IRA.

Sept. 20, 2000

A rocket-propelled grenade is fired at the headquarters of the MI5 security agency. There are no casualties. The attack is blamed on IRA dissidents.

July 7, 2005

Suicide bombers set off three simultaneous blasts in London's underground railway system and a fourth blast shortly afterward in a nearby double-decker bus. More than 50 people are killed and 700 injured. Two militant Islamic groups claim responsibility.
