John Couey makes his first appearance at a detention facility in Lecanto, Fla., March 20, 2005. According to authorities, Couey confessed in Georgia, where he was taken into custody as a "person of interest," to kidnapping and killing Jessica. His confession was thrown out because he did not have a lawyer present as he had requested. Couey lived near Jessica's home before he left for Georgia without telling authorities.
