New York

Senate - Winner: Democratic Sen. Charles Schumer

Schumer, a reliable liberal vote and a constant critic of President Bush, was a big favorite for a second term in the Senate. State Rep. Howard Mills was running against Schumer. He attracted some attention for his creative campaign gimmicks, such as planting 25 trees in New York in an effort to replace the mountain of paper he claims Schumer wastes on “empty” press releases.

House: New York has 29 House districts. The lineup was 19 Democrats and 10 Republicans. The retirements of Republican incumbent Amo Houghton and Republican incumbent Jack Quinn created open-seat races.
