North Dakota
Senate - Winner: Democratic Sen. Byron Dorgan
Despite the fact that Democratic Sen. Dorgan was seeking his third term in a solidly Republican state during a presidential year, there was not much evidence that Dorgan was vulnerable. Republican attorney Mike Liffrig challenged Dorgan. The White House courted former Republican Gov. Ed Schafer, but he declined to enter the race. Former LSU basketball coach Dale Brown twice considered a bid but also decided against running. Dorgan, who is now a member of the Democratic leadership in the Senate, is accused of “going Washington” but he is moderate enough where those charges have not hurt his re-election campaign. Liffrig, 44, has nine children and has promised a non-traditional campaign, saying that Dorgan does not represent state values. But Dorgan was popular, well funded, and poised to win.
House: North Dakota has one House seat held by Democrat Earl Pomeroy, who won re-election.
