Missouri

Senate - Winner: Republican Sen. Kit Bond

Democrats were hoping that a competitive presidential and gubernatorial race in this swing state would give them a chance to unseat three-term Republican Sen. Bond. Unfortunately for Democrats, Bond has a long history of winning competitive races. Bond faced Missouri Treasurer Nancy Farmer. Elected in 2000, Farmer, 47, is responsible for managing $17 billion in state revenue. Farmer is pro-abortion rights, supports the death penalty and the Second Amendment but opposes school vouchers and says that she would not have voted for No Child Left Behind. Farmer spent a lot of her campaign time attacking Bond as a rubber stamp for President Bush; Bond has a 98 percent record of voting with the president. Sen. Bond is a senior member of the Appropriations Committee, as well as a member of the Environment and Public Works; Health, Education, Labor and Pensions; and Small Business and Entrepreneurship committees. He has a record of bringing federal dollars back to the state.

House: Missouri has nine House districts. The lineup was five Republicans and four Democrats. Missouri had two open-seat races due to the retirements of Rep. Dick Gephardt (D) in the 3rd District, and Rep. Karen McCarthy (D) in the 5th District.
