Maryland

Senate - Winner: Democratic Sen. Barbara Mikulski

Mikulski easily survived a challenge from millionaire state Sen. E.J. Pipkin. She has won a fourth term in the Senate. Before winning her first term with 61 percent in 1986, Mikulski served five terms as a congresswoman representing Baltimore. Maryland Republicans were energized after winning the governor's seat in 2002, but their candidate, Pipkin, 47, faced a tough race. Pipkin has an MBA from UVA and spent $430,000 of his own money on his 2002 state senate race. Pipkin said he ran to create more jobs and clean up the Chesapeake Bay.

House: Maryland has eight House districts. The lineup was six Democrats and two Republicans. All incumbents coasted to new terms, including No. 2 ranking Democrat Steny Hoyer, who ran in a district that's becoming increasingly Republican.
