Indiana

Senate - Winner: Democrat Sen. Evan Bayh

As expected, Bayh won a second term easily, turning back a challenge from Butler University sociology professor Marvin Scott.

As a member of the Intelligence and Armed Services Committee, Bayh has been visible since the Sept. 11 attacks. His Senate voting record is moderate: he supported the president’s education bill but voted with his party against John Ashcroft’s nomination as attorney general. Indiana usually leans Republican but, with state Republicans more focused on winning the governor's seat, Bayh did not face a very competitive race.

Scott, Bayh’s opponent, has made four unsuccessful bids for Congress.

House: Indiana has nine House districts. The lineup was six Republicans and three Democrats. All incumbents ran for re-election. Democratic Rep. Baron Hill conceded defeat in a close race with trucking company owner Mike Sodrel. It was the first time in 10 years an incumbent lost a congressional race in the state.
