California
Senate - Winner: Democratic Sen. Barbara Boxer
Boxer swept past Republican Bill Jones, who was unable to raise money or gain strong support from Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger. Boxer, who won a third term, is considered one of the more liberal Democrats in the Senate. Jones, the California Secretary of State, is currently the founder of an ethanol company, a topic of some controversy as a portion of his platform was the need for more government funding on alternative energy sources.
Jones, 52, traveled California with President Bush and campaigned with Sen. John McCain. Boxer ran a strong campaign, raising money, campaigning on weekends, and touting a record on health care, education and gas prices. She is strongly against the war in Iraq and criticizes Mr. Bush’s allocation of funds. The election and continuing popularity of Republican Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, as well as Boxer’s thin margin of victory in 1998, was tempting for the Republicans, but Boxer’s hard campaigning and cash on hand deterred a stronger Republican effort.
House: California has 53 House districts. A total of 51 incumbents ran for re-election. Retirements of Doug Ose (R) in the 3rd District and Cal Dooley (D) in the 20th District created two open-seat races.
