Alabama
Senate - Winner: Republican Sen. Richard Shelby. Shelby barely touched more than $11 million in his war chest in rolling over little-known black Democrat, Wayne Sowell.
Democrats had no interest in challenging Shelby. Shelby has represented Alabama in the Senate as a Republican since 1994. Before 1994, Shelby was a Democratic Senator from Alabama, elected in 1986 after serving eight years as a Democratic member of the House. Shelby’s opponent was perennial candidate Wayne Sowell. Sowell, 45, already had three failed Alabama races behind him. His pet issue is legalizing marijuana.
House: Alabama has seven House districts. The lineup was five Republicans and two Democrats. All incumbents ran for re-election.
