Republicans strengthened their grip on both houses of Congress in the 2004 election, increasing their 51-48 Senate majority by picking up another four seats, and gaining five seats in the House. Among the party's most prized victories was the defeat of Senate Minority Leader Tom Daschle, marking the first time a Senate leader has been unseated since 1952. Democrats had reason to cheer in Illinois, where State Sen. Barack Obama easily won back a Republican seat.
