Mr. Nixon wipes his face with a handkerchief during the first debate, Sept. 26, 1960, in Chicago. He had the flu at the time and wore no makeup, a memorable mistake in debate history. Television lighting clearly showed his five o'clock shadow and some drops of sweat on his lip.
