This painting depicts a debate between Abraham Lincoln, standing, and incumbent Stephen A. Douglas during the Illinois senatorial campaign of 1858. Though the pair's three debates were part of a U.S. senate race, they set up Lincoln's run for president. Each debate lasted three hours, and focused on slavery and the union.
