Among the '80s roles to which Close brought immeasurable intelligence and emotion were the conniving Marquise Isabelle de Merteuil in "Dangerous Liaisons" (1988, with John Malkovich); the feminist Jenny Fields in "The World According to Garp" (1982, with John Lithgow and Robin Williams); and Alex Forrest, the seductive but unbalanced "other woman" in "Fatal Attraction" (1987).
