| | Researcher Nancy Segal has interviewed more than 50 pairs of identical twins who were separated at birth. "Identical twins raised apart are exceedingly rare," says Segal. "They're very, very valuable cases to scientists."
48 Hours Investigates found four sets of these scientific gems and brought them to New York. They’re all identical twins separated at birth, adopted and raised by different kinds of families, who then came together as adults. Research shows that identical twins raised apart are more alike than they are different. And they're surprisingly more alike than the brothers and sisters they are raised with. "To the extent that identical twins are more alike in these things, we can say with a fairly strong degree of confidence that yes, genes do play a role," says Segal.
