CBS anchorman Walter Cronkite holds up a copy of the New York Daily News the day after Apollo 11 first landed on the moon, July 20, 1969. "(That) man, having left his own environment, could go to a distant orb, could go to the moon, was quite clearly a breakthrough that was going to make an immense difference to the future of mankind," Cronkite said in 2000.
