| Iraq's foreign minister since 2001, Sabri led failed negotiations with U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan for the return of weapons inspectors to Iraq in 2002. He has crisscrossed the region seeking Arab support for Iraq.
Sabri was thought to be close to Saddam's younger son Qusai, and Saddam likely valued Sabri's loyalty and his command of English.
Born in 1948, Sabri was a rare figure in Iraqi politics: a man who fell from grace without ending his career in the process. He was recalled from the Iraqi Embassy in London in 1980, when his two brothers were jailed on conspiracy charges. One brother died in prison; the other was freed after six years. Sabri ran an English-language newspaper and arts journal in Baghdad for several years after the scandal. By the time of the Gulf War, his profile had been rehabilitated.
