| As deputy prime minister, Aziz was the only Christian in the Iraqi leadership and one of Iraq's best-known voices to the world. He was taken into custody by U.S. officials on April 24, 2003. Although he was one of Saddam's most loyal aides, like most non-Tikritis, he held virtually no power.
Born in Mosul in 1936, Aziz studied English literature at Baghdad College of Fine Arts and went on to become a teacher and journalist. He joined the Baath Party in 1957, working closely with Saddam to overthrow the British-imposed monarchy.
