Who Uses It?

GHB was once looked at only as a "date rape drug" but is now considered a club drug, and is widely used by young people. In 2001, GHB was second only to Ecstasy as the illegal substance cited most often in emergency room admissions. Emergency treatment for GHB side effects jumped from 56 hospital visits in 1994 to 4,969 in 2000. That number dropped slightly to 3,340 in 2001, the last year for which statistics are available. Some parent groups say many GHB stupors or comas are not diagnosed because hospitals don't routinely test for it. GHB can be obtained on the Internet or from dealers or can be manufactured at home from common cleaning solvents.
