| The British family doctor was convicted in 2000 of killing 15 elderly female patients -- many in good health – by deliberately injecting them with heroin during routine checkups in their homes or at his office. His crimes horrified the nation and raised questions about how he was able to evade detection for so many years.
An investigation launched after his trial concluded that Shipman had killed 215 of his patients, including 171 women and 44 men. A High Court judge said she also found a "real suspicion" that he was responsible for 45 other deaths, and there was insufficient evidence to form any conclusion in another 38 deaths.
On Jan. 13, 2004, Shipman was found hanging in his cell at Wakefield Prison, where he was serving 15 life terms, and later pronounced dead.
Shipman had maintained his innocence in each of the cases, and his motive remains a mystery.
