China: No Media Censorship of Obama

(AP Photo/Pablo Martinez Monsivais)
A White House official says China has assured the U.S. there will be no media censorship of President Barack Obama's remarks during a three-day visit that will take him to Shanghai and Beijing.

The official told CBS News the administration secured a Chinese government promise to carry the President's remarks "as spoken." The official also said the White House would be ready to "make it a big story" if China blocks out any of the President's words.

Government censors removed references to communism and dissent from the official Chinese language translation of President Obama's January inaugural speech. The main Chinese television network also wiped out certain passages from the inaugural speech.

John Delury, Associate Director of Asia Society's Center on U.S.-China Relations, says Chinese people are very aware of government efforts to control information flow.

"There's a cat and mouse game that goes on, but the reality on the ground in China is there is pretty good access to most of the information," Delury said. "China is a pretty wired place, especially the cities and the younger generation."

Experts say knowledgeable web-surfers know how to get around government efforts to block web sites and search engines.

The first test of the new promise not to censor the President will come when he holds a Shanghai "town hall" meeting with young Chinese leaders. While the discussion may not be censored, it was not clear whether China would air the event on the main television network.

Coverage plans have been part of intense U.S.-Chinese negotiations. The President's advance team contacted Chinese bloggers to help assure the spread of his message. The official New China News Service reported nearly 3,300 questions had been submitted for Obama.

Topics of interest include the President's Afghanistan war policy, his views on Taiwan and his thoughts about winning the Nobel Peace Prize. In a country where few have any knowledge of their own leaders' private lives, there are also questions about the Obama daughters.

Americans who live in or travel to China report widespread interest in all things Obama. The Asia Society's Delury recalls many Chinese were "taken aback" by Barack Obama's election.

Some assumed Hillary Clinton was "entitled" to the White House because of her husband's presidency. She was viewed as "the anointed one." Delury said it took some time for many Chinese citizens to make sense of Mr. Obama's election. Delury believes that for many in China, the U.S. election "was actually a real testament to the power and unpredictability of American democracy."

Obama is signaling that his paymasters have found another promising building-block for their global ruling-elite corporate/financial EMPIRE, one which they would like him to charm and incorporate.

"Yes, we can do EMPIRE bidness with China. They sure know how to manage their human cogs, and keep things going swimmingly. Bloody good show, old men."

Or as Dylan Ratigan might say beyond Keynesians, ?We?re all Corporate Communists now.?

People living in America especially NBC and CBS know that OBAMA is the annointed one. Look at the Presidential race. You have a JUNIOR senator as the Presidential Candidate and a Governor of a state running for VP. The entire story of the election was how could Palin be elected VP. NOONE dated ask is the PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDTE was ready for office because that would be racism.

How long will the right keep crying because the lost the election?
by billards53 November 15, 2009 8:49 PM EST
The longer the better . Had they spent half the time lobbying the bush administration to act in a fiscally responsible manner , to regulate wall street ,to serve and protect the constitution , not bend it to his own end , to choose their fights more carefully the al-qaeda leadership would be dead or behind bars and the economy would not be in shambles . Imagine obamas predicament in negotiating with China and other asian powers when they hold trillions of dollas in US treasury notes and we owe their banks plenty more . It is hard to negotiate with massive federal debt and US troops in Chinas backyard ( central asia ) Had the republicans ran a sound government they wouldn't be crying now . They controlled congress , the white house and also control the supreme court for 6 years ( 2002 to 2008 ) and made the rich richer until the meltdown last year . Now they are crying because they can't get anymore corporate welfare .Cry on to the right .

You get to employ a carrot + stick approach when you are talking. When you isolate, it's just stick. So the opposite side hardens, and 3rd parties don't come over to your side of the matter -- saw a cool site; Balkingpoints ; incredible satellite view of earth

Now if we could only get the US media to tell the truth, and do their jobs and start reporting the news. Follow the Chinese lead here folks.

It is a shame that we have to go outside the US to get the real news.

So, according to you -- nobody in the entire US media tells the truth...?

But YOU, of course --- DO know exactly what it is...?

Because media in other countries ALWAYS tells the truth...?

Sure.

Why would China want to censor Obama? Obama is going to tell them EXACTLY what they want to hear. China is smart. They know he is politically correct. They have nothing to fear from Obama. Actually, they might be hoping to hear of apologies when one of our spy planes had to emergency land there some years ago.

Why would Obama apologize?

He hasn't apologized to anyone yet.

Obama spent the first 6 months of his Presidency apologizing. What are you talking about?
