Exclusive Video: U.S.-Taliban Battle In Eastern Afghanistan

The Taliban is on the move, in a new offensive to prevent people from voting in the August 20 elections.

The "CBS Evening News" Monday featured exclusive video of a U.S. operation to re-capture a small town of 2,500 people in the eastern part of the country.

The battle for Barge Matal started at dusk yesterday, reports CBS News correspondent Mandy Clark. Hundreds of Taliban overran the town – the largest in the eastern province of Nuristan – a week ago. A hundred U.S. troops from the 10th Mountain Division backed by the Afghanistan Army are now fighting to win it back.

This battle lasted an hour. One U.S. soldier was killed along with 10 insurgents.

U.S. medics treated an insurgent who said he worked for a notorious Taliban leader who is accused of a series of attacks on coalition forces. A small arsenal of Taliban weapons was found at the local hotel – 1,700 AK47 rounds, more than 30 rocket propelled grenades and explosives.

The Taliban takeover of Barge Matal was a message not only for the villagers but also the people of Nuristan that the Taliban will not tolerate voting in next month' elections. Eighty-eight voting registration cards were found on one dead insurgent. They were taken from villagers by force.

"The Taliban has made a concerted effort in the last month, specifically targeting the voting, the voting sites," said Capt. Michael Harrison of the 10th Mountain Division. "They are trying to marginalize the government, trying to ensure that they can't participate in the election."

How is it possible that US forces loses soldiers in any operation where they are engaged.they are supposed to have better training better equippement than their enemies!!!
I noticed that IDF loses one man in about twenty combat operations when US forces loses more than one man in it each combat operation!!!

To justify sending troops into harms way in Afghanistan by labeling it as a war against terrorists has to serve as one of the greatest examples of how gullible the people can truly be. Throughout history, the greatest military tacticians have said that wars are won by disrupting the means an enemies uses to wage that war. For example if an enemy has lots of armored vehicles, planes, helicopters, manpower, etc; destroy the food, fuel and ammunition depots, the ball bearing and weapons factories, etc. Now wars are not cheap, they are very expensive to wage, and that's been true throughout history. Troops expect to be paid as well as the people working to support those campaigns. In this CBS report 1,700 AK47 rounds, more than 30 rocket propelled grenades and explosives were found in one hotel room. To think of how much more ammunition is hidden is staggering! To think about how much it costs to buy and replenish their ammunition is beyond staggering. So the question becomes where are the funds coming from to replenish all the ammo used against our troops? I'd wager that a major source of income is from the drug trade. According to official statistics, two thirds of the world?s heroin supply reportedly comes from Afghanistan, and this year Afghanistan?s opium poppy crop is set to break all records. Therefore, it seems to me a few unmanned radio control planes tanked up with a defoliant could put a serious hurting on the Taliban?s ability to wage their jihad against us infidels. That is of course if the defenders of democracy are serious about winning this war on terrorism. Incidentally, the same tactic holds true with resolving similar problems in Mexico and South America. If you can?t buy ammo all that?s left is to use sticks and stones, and that?s a problem I?d say is a little easier to deal with. If anyone believes killing is a necessary evil, then I?d say let?s kill some plants instead of some people. It?s easier on the conscience and can achieve the same objective.

The comment on US Soldiers dying in every operation is completly inacurate and unwarranted. Unfortunately, Americans back home are only informed about an operation over here when one of our Soldiers pays the ultimate sacrifice. My BN alone has been in over 150 TICs (Troops in Contact) and this Hero is our first casualty. He was a great Soldier, leader and friend. He was also a very proud father of two beautiful girls. Please pay some respect to the men and women who give Americans the right to speak out.

A more appropriate response would have been to express some sort of condolence towards the wife, children and parents of this great Soldier.

Please pray for this Soldier?s family as they struggle to make it through every tomorrow.
RIP my brother.

Why does obama refuse to provide the troops and the afghanistan people yearning for democracy the support they need to prevail in the war on terror?

OBAMA IS THE ENEMY
