Protester Interrupts Sotomayor Hearing

(AP Photo/Ron Edmonds)
The opening remarks of members of the Senate Judiciary Committee at Sonia Sotomayor's Supreme Court nomination hearing this morning were interrupted by an anti-abortion protester who called abortion "genocide."

Sen. Dianne Feinstein was speaking Monday morning when the protester shouted out, "Senator, what about the unborn?"

Judiciary Committee chairman Sen. Patrick Leahy quickly slammed down the gavel and called for order.

"You are guests of the Senate while you are here," he said. "Everybody is a guest of the Senate. Judge Sotomayor deserves the respect of being heard." Leahy called for police to remove the protester from the chamber, and they did so.

Leahy said there should be no displays either for or against Sotomayor during the hearing.

Police told The Associated Press that the protester is a Virginian named Robert James. He was reportedly charged with unlawful conduct and disruption of Congress.

A second protester shouted something not long after James' outburst. He was also removed from the hearing.

The AP reports that "Sotomayor turned her head briefly toward her family and friends seated in the front row as the man was taken away and his shouts faded." The nominee spent the morning largely silent as senators made their opening remarks.

No one supports the taking of a life as it has been framed by the GOP for Political Support for their detrimental and odius policies.

Woman, whom I can't speak for; should seek alternative methods if, they aren't fully prepared to bare a child. This is a given, contraception or abstinence should be the practice in lieu of this procedure....but, just like the drug (or war on drugs) conversation we're having on the other board, or the American Prohibition on Alchohol this procedure will(unfortunalty)still occur and more lives will be at risk.

Republicans should seek out the people WOMAN that this debate is about and supply money and support for counceling on contraception and stop the grand standing to drum up political support for their evil and greedy political agenda.

Republicans are off target and attempting to obscure proceedings with the same OLD wedge issue that has no barring on this hearing. If, the GOP really wanted to overturn Roe vs. Wade then why haven't they done so yet to this point? The US Supreme Court stands as dominated by a 5 to 4 Conservative bias, the Roe vs. Wade case has been reviewed by 14 different Justices and has been upheld as a private issue where it should stay.

I agree with you. The dumb Republican party still continues to be against killing unborn babies. This should be a private issue because most people do not want others to be aware they have taken a life. Even our most humble servant, Barak Obama, supports abortion. It must be ethical or he would not support it.
