Pawlenty: GOP Is Getting Its "Tails Kicked"

(CBS)
On "Washington Unplugged" Friday, Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty told Bob Schieffer that he wants to lend his voice to a Republican Party that is "getting [its] tails kicked in elections."

"Its a party that has experienced a lot of setbacks, is facing a lot of challenge," the governor said. Last week, Pawlenty announced he would not seek a third term as governor, setting off speculation about a 2012 presidential bid.

Pawlenty said he was "going to try to lend voice in Minnesota and elsewhere about the future of the Republican Party, and if that that gets some traction great, if not, that's okay too." He reiterated his comment following his announcement that he will not run again that he does not know what his future holds.

Schieffer invited the governor to announce his candidacy on the webcast – and got a quick "no" in response.

The "Washington Unplugged" host also asked Pawlenty why he feels his party needs "some improving and defining."

"Because we are getting our tails kicked in elections," Pawlenty said. "One definition of success in politics is do you win."

The governor, who was discussed as a possible running mate for then-candidate John McCain in the 2008 presidential election, said he feels his party needs to start pushing an optimistic message.

"Some things that I would like to talk about on behalf of the Republican party is the need to be positive and hopeful and optimistic," he said. "I think people want to follow that kind of leadership as opposed to negative and cynical and demeaning."

Pawlenty also indicated that in order to reach a larger demographic, Republicans need new ideas. He said "no" when Schieffer asked if he feels the party is reaching out to younger voters. (The governor is in town to speak to the College Republicans convention.)

Pawlenty was critical of President Obama's policies, saying they "are going to viewed in historical terms as having been horribly misdirected for the country." He said that the administration's economic policy will "come back and haunt us…in very dramatic ways."

Hear what else the governor had to say below on this week's edition of "Washington Unplugged." Also featured are a roundtable on President Obama's Cairo speech and a discussion with "Renegade: The Making of a President" author Richard Wolfe.

Pawlenty's comments underscore what's wrong with GOP politics today. For them, it doesn't seem to be about having a better vision for the country AND winning, it all seems to be about winning, period.

That is the problem with Republicans they run on the same platforms that got us in the current mess. The Virginia GOP candidate for governor is a prime example. His commercials sound like scripts from the heydey of the GOP mid-1990s to early 2000 before they wrecked the country.

Democrats love GOP moderates...for breakfast, lunch and dinner! Salted or plain! In fact ,Democrats would love it very much if the GOP would send up more Moderates!
Moderates are made-for-TV and that is a problem!

At its zenith, the Republican party could count 34% of the electorate as party members. With less than moderates running, the party could only get the vote of the die hard Republicans.By the time of the election, that number was 21%.

so the question to you is, could the Republicans win the Presidency with 34% of the vote or 21%?

Because if you alienate the moderates, you also alienate most Independents or right leaning Democrats--your idea would have been a lot like the attitude of the GOP after the election: hunker down and appeal to the base. How is that working for you?

The current data suggests that those who now identify with the Republican party since the election is now down to 17%.

This is not a game of dead man--the person who digs themselves the deepest hole is not the winner.

And the GOP deserves to get its tail kicked. As long as there are absolutely no new ideas--tax cuts, scare mongoring and homophobia are getting tiresome--they will continue to gets their tails kicked. It might also be a good idea to dump Rush, Sarah, Hannity and Fox News in general. Moderation is the key, but true to the radical nature of the GOP base isn't going to allow that. Maybe they should dump the base, too.

Run Sarah Run! Run Newt Run! Run Bobby Run! What a fruity basket of hypocrits they all are. It is going to be great entertainment watching the Repugs over the next few years. In all my many years of witnessing elections I have never seen such a debacle within a party. NEVER!

We wanted change. We elected Change. What we got is a move at 90mph to a socialist state, government control of the auto industry, the banks, and before long, health care. The same morons who brought you the IRS, Medicare, and the House Bank are going to bring you to the poorhouse in more ways than one.

No matter who you voted for, these days we're all in the same boat: between Barack and a hard place.

So, is Pawlenty saying that the GOP should be playing the song "Don't Worry, Be Happy" to the public while the background music their WAR contractors and lobbyists play is from the movie "Jaws"??

Republicans have to learn to contribute to the campaigns of GOP conservatives...because it's a waist of funding to send it to GOP Moderates.
Moderates like Powell and McCain are loved by Democrates, the way cats love little pet birds. The little bird loses and the cat wins, every time.

Our Politicians keep telling us our Immigration laws are broken and we need an comprehensive solution, which are code words for Amnesty, our Immigration Laws are not broken, they just have not been enforced, what is broken is our Political system when we elect Corrupt/Pandering politicians that puts their desires ahead of the Constitution of USA and the Rule of Law!

Our government fails the most basic and primary task & duty of government, to protect this Nation and its Citizens from invasion and enforce its laws.

They refuse to abide by our Constitution, refuse to enforce our Immigration Laws and refuse to honor their Oath of Office!

Our Government, past & present, Republican & Democrat, have allowed the invasion of 20 to 30 million criminals and uneducated peons which is the largest invasion of any Nation, at any time, by any means & in direct violation of Article IV, Section IV of our Constitution.

This refusal to abide by our Constitution or enforce our Immigration Laws should be classified as Treason of the most foul kind, & as grounds for impeachment & trials for Treason!

Not only have they allowed the invasion, they force American tax payers to pay Billions on Billions of dollars to provide Welfare, Prison cells, Educate the invaders numerous children, and free medical care, at the same time the invading horde break numerous laws and massive document fraud, & are destroying our schools, hospitals, communities, culture and standard of living while Robbing, Raping, Killing & Assaulting American Citizens at an rate the terrorist can only dream about.

Recent statements in Mexico from both President Obama and Secretary of State Hillary something needs to be done. "Our inability to prevent weapons from being illegally smuggled across the border to arm these criminals causes the deaths of police officers, soldiers, and civilians," she said.

But no mention, concern or care that their refusal to stop the Massive Invasion of Illegal Aliens pouring across our borders or enforce our immigration laws that causes an estimated 25 Americans deaths per day and 10,s of thousands victims of Assault, Robberies, Rapes, Identify thief, and other assorted crimes committed by the invading horde of Illegal Aliens from Mexico on American citizens each year!

It is a telling indictment & shows their Empathy & Compassion of our Politicians & their priorities when they express 100,s of time more concern over three Terrorist being water broader than the havoc & crimes of Illegal Aliens against American Citizens!

Most of our Politicians in Wash. DC are wading knee deep in innocent American blood and suffering because they put Self Interest ahead of the interest of American Citizens & the future of this Nation!

The Welfare vote for the Democrats to further their Socialist Agenda and the Slave Labor for their Pay Masters in the Chamber of Commerce & Business for the Republicans is more important to our Corrupt power mad Politicians than the lives and safety of Americans citizens!

The Citizens of this Nation have not sacrificed with blood, sweat & tears for over 200 years & obeyed the Laws of the land, paid the taxes, and fought the wars & built this Nation to see Corrupt politicians turn this Nation into the United States of Mexico without a shot being fired, to serve their demented, nefarious goals and lust for power!
