Katie Couric's Notebook: Justice Souter

(AP Photo/J. Scott Applewhite)
The 105th Justice of the Supreme Court, David Souter, will retire at the end of the Court's session in June.

He was appointed by President George H.W. Bush in 1990, and heralded as a conservative who would be tough on crime. But early decisions upholding abortion rights and banning prayer at public school graduations proved…he didn't perform as advertised.

His vacancy will lead to lots of guessing games about who President Obama might pick, but as Marc Ambinder wrote today..spoiler alert! With a near filibuster-proof majority in the Senate, odds are his nominee will be confirmed...and join the Court at a critical time in our history.

Justice Souter once said he had the world's best job in the world's worst city, and those who know him say he wants to head home...to New Hampshire.

At a healthy 69-years-young, the man many conservatives have considered their Trojan Horse...will now have time to enjoy those greener pastures.

That's a page from my notebook.
