Obama Rolls Out Carpet For Newest Dem

(AP Photo/J. Scott Applewhite)
President Barack Obama lauded Arlen Specter's independence, calling the Pennsylvania senator "one tough hombre" after bolting the Republican party – his political home for nearly 30 years - to join the Democratic caucus.

Mr. Obama and Vice President Joe Biden officially welcomed the newest Senate Democrat into the fold during a White House news conference Wednesday.

Mr. Obama said he was "thrilled" at Specter's decision and felt "the American people will be better off for it."

The move gives Democrats 59 Senate seats and they could gain their 60th if Al Franken wins his Minnesota recount (entering its 4th month).

That would give Democrats a filibuster-proof majority that could greatly help Mr. Obama push through his legislative agenda. But Specter repeated his insistence that his vote would not be automatic.

"Anyone who thinks Arlen will cash in his independence have another thing coming," Biden said.

Mr. Obama said he doesn't expect Specter to be a "rubber stamp," but noted their joint interest in health care reform, education and medical research as possible points of cooperation.

On Tuesday, Specter said his decision to leave the GOP came after growing "increasingly at odds with the Republican philosophy."

Some speculate that Pennsylvania's current political landscape would not favor the moderate Republican in next years mid-term election. Specter said he wants a 6th term and "makes no bones about that." (Read analysis about Specter's decision.)

Specter will hope to gain from Mr. Obama's popularity, who has pledged his "full support" for the new Democrat.

Specter said he reached out to his Republican colleagues Tuesday to explain his thinking, but many are rankled by the switch, warning of the dangers of one-party dominance in Congress.

"The threat to the country presented … by this defection really relates to the issue of whether or not in the United States of America our people want the majority party to have whatever it wants without restraint, without a check or balance," said Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky.

come on....is it possible to be "serious" here....the reason the democrats are protecting Specter on his move is because he "says" he agrees with them....it's as simple as that.......now, if one of "theirs" changed,.....he/she would be a certified SOB....of the highest order !!

Did Snarlin-Arlen bite himself in the tail? The Dems may love him now, but don't be so sure in PA 2010.

There is nothing morally wrong with Specter's switch. We elect the man not the party as they do in parliamentary systems. Even in those systems PMs sometimes have been known to switch parties. The Republicans are responding to their defeat in last years elections by going to the extreme right and staying there. They are alienating their own moderates who are taunted and abused when they disagree with Limbaugh, McConnell and Co. in Specter's case by voting for Obama's stimulis legislation.Where are those Republicans to go? Is Specter looking out for his political future? Of course! But he wants to do it by maintaining his right to think for himself.

Hey all you libs who see nothing wrong with this, I got to ask you: how'd you like it if you contracted with a painter to paint your entire house. The total is $3000. You pay him half up front. You asked all your walls to be painted cream color. You go away , you come back 2 days later. All the walls are dark brown instead. Lovely, eh? The painter tells you tough, I changed my mind, I decided to paint brown instead. Also, I'm keeping your money.

So, THAT is the way voters feels when they vote for one guy, and they get the opposite. Go su*ck on this analogy for awhile, you narcissistic neomarxists.

What are you talking about? Specter is no different now than he was when he ran for the office. He hasn't changed and is still the same... the Party? That is what has moved away from him. YOU folks have said it yourself.. YOU think you have to move in the direction where you are MORE conservative when the People of this nation have so obviously said they wish to move the other direction, those Specter represents included. What you propose is to ignore the wishes of the people ALL ACROSS that area of the country in order to purify the party. He LEFT the Party, the people still have their representation, chances are much better representation as they are more in line with the Democrats.

I thought we got rid of the Texas Cowboy, but here is the cowboy junk again. ============ The reality is there is no longer dissent. Democracy is powered by dissent. What does that tell all of us?

You poor souls have been defending the Worst in History and to busy being ditto heads to understand there is a difference. Dissent is when you are INVOLVED in the debate... you are part of the discussion on how to turn this nation around, how to head it in a new and different direction as the people so plainly said in the Election. What you and the Republican Party are engaged in is obstruction. You have NO intention of following the wishes of the People but instead hope to block any meaningful change what so ever. You want to keep the same failed Economic Policy regardless of how loudly the people have said they want it CHANGED. Now if you want to get involved in the discussion of how we best bring about that change, your dissent can and WILL be heard.

What Specter did here is shameful, disgraceful, dishonest, unscrupulous, immoral, disloyal, betraying, and should also be illegal. There is a special corner in hell where piles of steaming dogsh*t like Specter go, after they die. Let?s all hope it?s not too long before he finds that special corner.

Why is that? According to the Records of the state of PA over 200,000 Republican's changed their party affiliation since 2006, you don't think Specter should have the same rights as ALL those people? What would you folks like? We could start Work Camps for all those who abandoned the Party?? Look a Political Party, of ALL things should be the option of EVERY American. Heaven knows I never heard this kind of garbage out of the Dem's when Campbell or Shelby switched.

If we elected the party, that might be valid. But we elect the person, and the party is not a legal factor in his serving his term.
The benefit of our system is that the person we elect gets to use his or her own independent thinking.

You are so right! It's our willingness to change to be different that has made us who we are. Without Independent thought something as INSANE in 1776 as a Government by the People would never have been tried.

Welcome Arlen but to put you on notice. In the Democrat Party you will find opinions that range all over the place. As Will Rogers said it, "I don't belong to and organized Political Party, I'm a Democrat". Good luck and jump right in!

Your analogy is false they do not vote for a party they vote for a person. Once agin party is a lifeless term person is flesh and blood with ideas and goals emotions.

That is why the reactionaries are destroying themselves they leave no room for moderates I know I changed parties a while back.

Rats jumping from a sinking ship.

Why is the ship sinking? The folks piloting it for the last 8 years wanted it to FAIL. So, they drilled big holes in it...

Mission Accomplished

Specter escaped.
