Fla. Sheriff Plays The “Hussein” Card At Palin Event; Campaign Calls Remark “Inappropriate”

(CBS)
From CBS News' Scott Conroy:

Lee County Sheriff Mike Scott took the stage moments ago as one of the introductory speakers at a rally here for Sarah Palin. After delivering brief remarks in support of Palin, Sheriff Scott flipped the switch and used Barack Obama’s middle name in order to incite the crowd of thousands of people who have already gathered here.

“On Nov. 4, let’s leave Barack Hussein Obama wondering what happened,” the law enforcement officer said.

UPDATE: Palin campaign spokesperson Tracey Schmitt issued the following statement on Sherriff Scott’s remarks: “We do not condone this inappropriate rhetoric which distracts from the real questions of judgment, character, and experience that voters will base their decisions on this November.”

According to his web site, Scott became sheriff in 2005.

“People could say running for sheriff took either courage, ignorance, or a combination of both,” Scott said on the web site.

Many of the thousands of people in attendance roared their approval at Sheriff Scott’s dig at the Democratic nominee, whose Kenyan father shared the same exact name as his son.

After Sheriff Scott left the podium, local radio host Mandy Connell took the stage next. She too drew a loud ovation when she said Obama “hangs around with terrorists.”

Republicans: Stuck in 3rd grade name calling.

Remember the people who used to make fun of your elementary school classmates who had funny names (or names they could twist into something funny)?

They all became Republican political "strategists" for Bush and McCain.

Scare tactics all over again. Ooooh, his middle name is the same as that dead guy from I-Rack. Oooh, he must be a bad guy. For a party who need independents to win this election, they sure are resorting to tactics that independent voters (and many Dems and Repubs alike) loathe. Way to go.

His name is Barack Hussein Obama.
Hussein is his middle name. It''s a fact. Why is it that these news channels jump on something like this in his defense, when they are constantly attacking McCain and Palin. It''s ridiculous.

That loud mouthed rude woman is completely inappropriate. The Republicans are scraping the bottom of the barrel in an attempt to deflect attention away from their dismal results at running our government.

McCAIN has LOST ALL HONOR.

They want to sling SLIME then wash their hands of it.

What is the net effect? They get their hits in, then say "oh, we did not mean it." Meanwhile, the media covers the "hussein" story and the Republicans get the slime spread out through the country.

Nothing but trash.

We need jobs, not trash.
We need healthcare, not trash.
We need our retirement funds, not trash.

In response to kittnlover, of course it''s his middle name, but he generally doesn''t use it so when people use it they are simply bringing it up to highlight his alleged muslim roots. When George Bush''s father was running for President, his campaign referred to one of his challengers as ''Pierre du Pont'', which was his full name but he went by ''Pete''. It''s as if we all referred to McCain as John Sidney McCain in an attempt to feminize him because Sidney is a girls'' name now.

the GOP is turning gestapo.

You are supposed to quake in fear, and hate everyone ane everything because this hate-crazed woman palin tells you to. She is so full of hatred and venom and fearmongering that she will stop at nothing for power. What a shocking and repulsive set of values she has. Is this going to infect the whole GOP? aren;t there some decent people in GOP who are going to say something before she defames and destroys your party?

Look at the polls---people DESPISE THE GOP TICKET. PALIN DID IT HER WAY, DIDN''T SHE? SHE IS TAKING MCCAIN DOWN, AND RUNNING THE SHOW JUST THE WAY SHE WANTS TO.

mccain/palin are HATE
Obama is HOPE

You want to talk gestapo?
Then look at what The Glorious Leader Obama was trying to do in Missouri by using law enforcement to intimidate anyone running an ant-Obama ad with threats of lawsuits.
Try that for gestapo tactics.

Because it''s meant to scare people. Do you hear the Obama campaign emphasizing the middle names of the GOP: "John SIDNEY McCain" or "Sarah LOUISE Palin?" And do the GOP mention Joe Biden''s middle name? The answer, of course, to all three candidates with good ole ''Merican sounding names is no.

Not subtle, just like Sarah.

While we''ve neatly tip-toed around it, Sarah is using language that is inappropriate. While it''s been interesting watching "anything goes" without rebuttal, it needs to stop.

I think American women, especially white American women need to say, "Enough". Stop using your status as a white woman, to say anything. Say what you have to say and fit within cultural norms!

Where are all the elected GOP women? Cat got your tongues?

You must submit to the same scrutiny as the men. Enough with word choice and manner of delivery.

This is an absolute disgrace, McCain/Palin would rather resort to mudslinging and name calling...When America is in a financial meltdown...clearly there are more pressing issues for the country...other than Obama''s middle name...McCain''s campaign is becoming INSULTING.

Sheriff Scott is a bigot and the fact that he was elected sheriff says a lot for Lee County.

So, he is named Barack Hussein Obama? There are thousands of men who are doctors, lawyers, clergymen, every day folks who are also named Hussein. What is disgraceful about the name?

And to think that someone voted this racist as Sheriff. How can any fairness, be in this man''s district. He should be Fired.

With John McCain choice of Sarah Palin as VP, America is breathing fresh air again. America needs fresh air! Whatever Obama names are, Hussein, Sadam or other, it really does not matter. The Sheriff only wanted to make clear that Barrack Hussein Obama, is not to be trusted as president of the United States of America.

Give that dog (I mean Palin) a bone!! She can''t say anything worthwhile or true, so why give her any credibility or attention? She is just a noisy gong who cannot even form a good coherent sentence. But I guess because she is reaching out to the d-u-m-b-a-s-s-e-s who cannot comprehend anything beyond their idyllic bubble. And what''s more, she is a disgrace to evangelical christians because Palin cannot fathom speaking truth and offering real solutions for America. I am glad that my pastor spoke out against the lies and deception of McCain and Palin. And it goes to show that people are seeing beyond the c-r-a-p spewed by McCain and his bulldog.

Hussein O has no truth, substance or experience his whole history has nothing but holes and Flip Flops on who he evan beleives he is and what he stands for. His mama made sure of it, read it his book. he won''t stand on any principle, because he never developed any. you can''t blame him though look at his upbringing he had no steady father figure, swept from country to country and one religion to antoher influenced by radicals. Face the facts folks and read them for yourselves, this guy this man needs to prove himself a lot more before he would get my vote, his age and past experience leaves him "wet behind the ears". he''s got plenty of time let''s see how he handles himself as a seasoned senator for awhile before we hand him the White House.

To those who say "it''s his middle name why not use it." you know as well as I do why that was done. To suggest that because he shares the same name with a dictator that somehow he shares the similar views will tar him with the same brush. That''s why it is inappropriate. A person cannot help what they were named. Rarely was Bill Clinton ever called William Jefferson Clinton. And Bush''s "W" initial is used only to distinguish him from his father. This is a blatant attempt to color people''s opinions cheaply.

Since no one uses Sarah Louise Heath Palin or John Sidney McCain III, interjecting Obama''s middle name is nothing more than a scare tactic and everyone making that lame excuse that it''s his name knows it!

When I looked at my 401K statement this morning, it''s funny Obama''s middle name didn''t cross my mind but the names Bush and McCain most certainly did.

The Palin Campaign had to say using the middle name was inappropriate, BUT how different is that than the Ayers story? We''re talking about degrees of separation here... the fact they backed off the Sherrif''s comments yet justified their own shows a confusion on the part of the Palin campaign: clearly they intend to foster this kind of fear and hate toward Obama... they are just using different means to do it.

The GOP race baiters don%u2019t get it! We democrats aren%u2019t upset that you use his middle name. We%u2019re upset why you use his middle name. It is an attempt to bolster the credibility of a tired argument that he is a practicing Muslim, was sworn in on a Koran, will not deal forcefully with our enemies. We have no problem with you using his middle name. It would be nice if when you did it, you were not trying to say that he socializes with %u201Cterrorists%u201D or that he is the anti-Christ or that he is black. Your use of his middle name is always used towards that end. Many of us have a problem with you being racist and with your discrimination towards an Islamic surname. Shame on you for trying to put lip stick on your racism by simply saying, %u201Cit is his name%u201D. Yes, it is his name. And you know *** good and well what you are attempting to accomplish when you vocally inflect it as Cunningham and Scott did.

http://www.salon.com/opinion/feature/2008/02/28/hussein/

Barack is a Semitic word meaning "to bless" as a verb or "blessing" as a noun. In its Hebrew form, barak, it is found all through the Bible. It first occurs in Genesis 1:22 -- "And God blessed (%u1E07%u0101re%u1E35%u0259) them, saying, Be fruitful, and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let fowl multiply in the earth."%u2026
Now let us take the name "Hussein." It is from the Semitic word hasan, meaning "good" or "handsome." Husayn is the diminutive, affectionate form. Barack Obama''s middle name is in honor of his grandfather, Hussein, a secular resident of Nairobi, Kenya. Americans may think of Saddam Hussein when they hear the name, but that is like thinking of Stalin when you hear the name Joseph. There have been lots of Husseins in history, from the grandson of the prophet Mohammed, a hero who touched the historian Gibbon, to King Hussein of Jordan, one of America''s most steadfast allies in the 20th century. The author of the beloved American novel "The Kite Runner" is Khaled Hosseini.
But in Obama''s case, it is just a reference to his grandfather%u2026.So, anyway, Obama''s first two names mean "blessing, the good." If we are lucky enough to get him for president, we can only hope that his names are prophetic for us.

What about Palin''s affiliation with the Radical Alaskan Secessionist Party, AKIP. Their founder, Joe Vogler, said ''The fires of hell are frozen glaciers compared to my hatred for America'' and was killed in a plastic explosives deal gone bad.

Around twenty years ago we had a Republican administration giving arms and aid to a guy named Hussein, and about twenty years ago, we had McCain preaching deregulation in the financial sector.
