Palin Contradicts McCain On Pakistan, Seems To Back Obama’s Position

(CBS)
From CBS News' Scott Conroy:

(PHILADELPHIA) Sarah Palin told a customer at a Philadelphia restaurant on Saturday that the United States should “absolutely” launch cross-border attacks from Afghanistan into Pakistan in the event that it becomes necessary to “stop the terrorists from coming any further in,” a comment similar to the one John McCain condemned Barack Obama for making during last night’s presidential debate.

During Friday’s debate, Obama criticized the Bush administration for sending billions of dollars in aid to Pakistan without ridding the border region of terrorists.

“If the United States has al Qaeda, bin Laden, top-level lieutenants in our sights, and Pakistan is unable or unwilling to act, then we should take them out,” Obama added.

McCain fired back hard, arguing that newly elected Pakistani president Asif Ali Zardari has had his “hands full” and suggesting that Obama’s tough talk was naďve.

“You don’t say that out loud,” McCain said. “If you have to do things, you have to do things, and you work with the Pakistani government.”

Palin’s apparent disagreement with McCain’s position on Pakistan came as the Alaska governor was picking up a couple of cheesesteaks at Tony Luke’s in South Philadelphia. She was approached by a man wearing a Temple University t-shirt, who later identified himself as Michael Rovito.

“How about the Pakistan situation?” Rovito asked. “What’s your thoughts about that.”

“In Pakistan?” Palin responded.

“What’s going on over there, like Waziristian?”

“It’s working with Zardari to make sure that we’re all working together to stop the guys from coming in over the border,” Palin said. “And we’ll go from there.”

“Waziristan is blowing up,” Rovito replied.

“Yeah, it is,” Palin said. “And the economy there is blowing up, too.”

“So we do cross-border, like from Afghanistan to Pakistan, you think?” Rovito asked.

“If that’s what we have to do stop the terrorists from coming any further in, absolutely, we should,” Palin said.

In her first national television interview after becoming the Republican vice presidential nominee, Palin was pressed by ABC’s Charlie Gibson on whether the U.S. should launch cross-border attacks into Pakistan. She said that the United States “must do whatever it takes” to thwart Islamic extremists and said, “America has to exercise all options in order to stop the terrorists who are hell bent on destroying America and our allies.”

But Palin did not, at that time, explicitly express her support for cross-border attacks, as she did at the Philadelphia restaurant on Saturday.

Who even cares what Palin says anymore? We can''t understand what she''s trying to communicate anyway. She probably was trying to outline McCain''s position but just failed miserably. She is a terrible interview!! Speaking off the cuff is not her specialty. She''s got to figure out how to talk direct and to the point if she''s is going to survive. If the VP debate goes anything like the interviews she''s given, someone should tell her to get off the ticket.

Palin is gradually imploding. How long can McCain afford to keep her on the ticket? How in the world could McCain choose this governor with such lack of foreign affairs to be a heartbeat away from making the most important decisions regarding the wars we are involved in?

Faux John McCain, "Sarah Palin did not say that. I''ve known Sarah for a little over one month....She didn''t say that. I''ll call her or my staff will."

McCain''s campaign staff submits another press release.

He only met her once before deciding in a phone-call with her to choose her for VP. I suspect he looked into her eyes and could see her soul. And we know how that goes.....

She sounds so much like one of these beauty contestants you see on Miss America ... shiny and pretty on the outside, dull and stupid on the inside ... McCain must had had senior moment when he picker to be his VP. That person who said she makes Bush look smart nailed it.

How degrading would it be for us to put our top military strategists, who have likely spent their careers working for the knowledge base they posses, in a position where they are required to brief this nut job, and potentially (likely) be required to follow her orders?

I personally do not want to be one who requires that of them. I respect the troops too much.

This is a brilliant move by the McCain campaign. They repeatedly have Palin look like a fool for minor interviews.

If you watch Palin''s debates from Alaska, you''ll see that Palin will make Biden into the real fool.

For those who still think that Palin is still a good choice for McCain I say this that is exactly what wrong with the republican party in constian denial. and that what got us in this mess in the first place. It was bush with the denial about the war, It was McCain with the denial of the economy, and now his v.p. choice wake up gop god forbid if you guys win. hopefully notbut just incase you do i went to the store and brought some candles. For i believe you''ll bring us back to the stone age.

Palin has to be brilliant at the VP debate or she can kiss her VP bid good-bye; probably before 11/4. Here interviews have been atrocious. Speaking off the cuff is not her specialty. I see opinion columns claim that Palin said this or that . . . and I think, "yeah, I guess thats what she might have been saying . . . but she could also have been saying . . ". I''m telling you, the VP debate is really her last chance to show up.

The guys? That''s all she can come up with on the spot? The guys? Does she know who these guys are? That''s the worst junior high school level response... in fact, I''m sure 8th grade teachers everywhere hear more intelligent answers from their students on any given day. It''s not going to help Palin to study with Lieberman any more... she just doesn''t have the IQ power necessary for the big leagues. It''s futile.

why are they even trying to quote Palin on the issues. The reality is that no one has a clue. Everything we''ve heard so far has been vague generalties. She better all of a sudden have the ability to answer questions directly and with conviction come the VP debate or her political career could come to a screeching halt.

"Story Plant!

If anything was a plant it was the person asking the question. CBS has been overextending itself to cover her fairly and give her all the benefit of the doubt. I saw that debate in Alaska and she was fine but no match for Biden.

OPERATION SAVING SARAH
As the lawmakers of Washington are getting ready to bail out wallstreet I call upon all American women to bail out Sarah from destruction. Sarah Palin, a mother of five is being sacrificed in the name of getting women votes to elect Mccain to the white house, currently needs rescuing. It is up to women of America to rescue her. The poor woman is confused and out of place. God knows how long it is gone to take for her to realize that she was being used and abused. Will it take a nervous break down?
Her sheltering and hiding by the Mccain''s campaign is yet the worst insult to her, her family and American women. As if she has some kind of contagious disease. I am sure she misses her kids and wants at some point to stop embarrassing her family, her Alaska and her Wasilla. Time is running out and it is running fast. Women of America, mothers of the land let us get together and save Sarah from the cynical Mcainic machine. We need to do it and do it quick. For our children, especially our little girls to not undermine the importance of education. For our young girls to not consider living in clueless land, to recognize when they are being used and know when to pull out of a situation and get the education necessary for a given position. American women please let%u2019s have mercy on Sarah. Check my blog: http://mercy4usa.blogspot.com/

So some kid in a Philly cheesesteak joint just blurts out what about Pakistan? Sure. I bet that happens a lot in Philly.

And she did not contradict McCain unless you willfully take her statement out of context. Read her first comment about working together with the Pakistani government.

I love the way the media tears away at her relentlessly for a month then comments how her poll numbes are dropping. Can you imagine how low Obama''s poll numbers would be if they went after him like they go after Palin.

If McCain wins this election, the media needs to be taken to account for their behavior. If Obama wins, the media will learn that in a Socialist country, the first to suffer are the media.

I''d like to point out something fishy about the story.

The "random" graduate student involved in this exchange with Palin in Philly used to write for the local newspaper in Wasilla, Alaska. *** is going on?

Michael Rovito''s last article was published at the Frontiersman just a couple weeks ago.

May I also note, like the lunatic lefty I am, that Rovito sounds Italian for Rove. :D

Is it just me, or does anyone else find it antithetical to the diplomatic process to be quoted time-after-time referring to our adversaries as "the guys" and, even worse, the "good guys" & the "bad guys" -- even McCain called them the "bad guys" last night during the Presidential Debate. Please -- this over-simplification insults the intelligence of the U.S. electorate and perpetuates the international perception that Americans are egocentric, egotistical and ignorant. Can you for one minute hear Condoleesza Rice calling them the "good guys" & "bad guys"? Pitiful.
