Where They Stand: Saving Homes

(CBS)
Ben Tracy is a CBS News correspondent based in Los Angeles.
If you don’t believe the housing market is as bad as the media makes it out to be, just head to Las Vegas. It’s ground zero in the mortgage mess. In fact, one in every 35 household in the metro area received a foreclosure notice this year. That’s amazing when you think about it! Vegas is our backdrop for tonight’s “Where They Stand” piece that will explain the presidential candidate’s positions on the housing crisis – and how they propose to fix it.

As you know, when it comes to any home improvement, there is no easy fix. One of the people we met in Las Vegas was Adriana Camejo. She’s a young mother who bought her house in a Las Vegas suburb two years ago. She had a great job and even better credit. Unfortunately, she signed on for a risky adjustable-rate mortgage. She says her lender told her that her interest rate was 6 percent, but after signing her loan documents she realized it was 11 percent. When her husband lost his job, she fell behind on her payments, and is now facing foreclosure. Her credit is ruined.

So, would the housing plans of Sens. McCain and Obama help her stay in her home? I was pretty surprised by what the candidate’s agree on and how their political philosophies inform their plans. Tune in tonight at 6:30 p.m. EST and see which ideas you find most compelling. And you can click here to see our past installments of "Where They Stand."

So, what is most important? Fundraising dinners or having a plan to face the economic crisis? Anyway, people from big oil just paid 5 million dollars to have dinner with McCain in Florida yesterday. I would go for the BH gig anytime. Less corrupt.

Where is Sarah Palin on the talking point circuits? Obama, McCain, Biden, their surrogates and supports are out answering questions about what happened yesterday and today on Wall Street and giving talking points to Cable and other networks. All she does is talk for 30 minutes from a teleprompter then spends more time signing autographs and avoiding questions from reporters. She parrots what they are writing for her but cannot have a personal opinion on the disastrous economy? Is she just a PR person or a candidate for a VP position? Where are the media? You are failing your responsibilities by not asking a simple question as %u201Cwhere is Sara Palin in all this and why doesn%u2019t she give her personal opinion through Q/A with the Media?%u201D I am really disappointed and if she wins, it would be because the media covered so much and enabled her to avoid the real vetting. All you ask about why isn%u2019t Obama ahead in the polls, don%u2019t you know the answer? It%u2019s the elephant in the room that no one wants to talk about. But when it comes to Palin, No, you would never ask the question about her disappearance from the scene, you don%u2019t dare angering McCain. So, let people remain blind to her shortcomings. By the way, why don''t you also ask her to reveal her Income Tax Returns? Good work, Media!!!!!

How is it that we''re paying excessive state taxes, school taxes, property taxes, federal taxes on $50,000/yr. Did I mention that we have 3 children and send our children to private school, save for retirement and still live a comfortable life. So, why am I not crying for any HELP in a stagnant Western New York economy. I think it has to do with not overspending and following a budget!! How can we be dependent on a gov''t that can''t balance a budget. That''s the problem "dependent on gov''t" or someone to clean up their mess. If gov''t spending and bailouts continue someone won''t be getting a check (or should I say a handout) from us. By the way, this by no means is political because there is no political party that can bail the country out of this mess, actually WE THE PEOPLE and POLITICIANS created it.
