Katie Couric's Notebook: Where They Stand

How many times during how many elections have voters said the same thing: We in the media focus too much on the war of words, or ads, or personalities, and not enough on the battle of ideas?

Too much process - not enough policy.

Well, I hear you, and starting tonight, the CBS Evening News is trying something new. "Where They Stand" is a 35-part series examining exactly what the candidates would do on all the major issues, from energy to the economy, from health care to homeland security.

Tonight we're talking taxes, and taking an in-depth look at the McCain and Obama plans. They would affect different families with different incomes in very different ways, and we'll make sure you know how the next president might impact the next check you write to Uncle Sam.

"Where They Stand" is all about the issues, and all about giving you the best information - and the best reporting - so you can make an informed decision in just 56 days.

The END is NEAR (a pun)! More news coming out on Sarah. There is no way the few stories we know about, such as: supporting the ''Bridge to Nowhere'', Keeping the Bridge money to partly build the ''Road to NOWHERE'', (btw, why is Alaska #50 in Education? Run out of money, duh) ''Trooper-gate'', intimidating the town Librarian - she intimated a Librarian, ***-it!, taking per diems for staying HOME, for STAYING HOME. Hey! Where''s my PER DIEM! Lipstick! The PIG here is JOHN McCain. A man who of so little character. What''s next? There''s more coming.

So, some of you think Obama meant Sarah is a Pig. Hmmmm, let''s think about this. he wanted the story to be about lipstick. Hmmmm, he wanted to waste his entire day. The real story here is the AD - McCain''s minions spliced parts of several news stories and created a NEW STORY - nice work. In the end they had the nerve to drag Katie into this. It''s mind blowing. Another reason a Hillary supporter is now an Obama fan. We can''t survive 4 more years of Bush/ McCain.

Katie, This Lipstick story is disgusting - more from the Karl Rove factory. The big story is this: does Sen. McCain think Sen. Obama called his running mate a PIG? He must, he paid for the ads and they speak for him. I am sorry I missed your show tonight - I hope you demanded an apology from McCain for dragging you into this.
This kind of politics might be normal. But it got us where we are today - an administration that has burned our money and lied to us - just to start with.
Katie, where are you on this?

CBS News must think the American people are foolish. Sen. Obama did want his lipstick comment to be linked to Gov. Palin. It''s very plain to see his intent. When Catie Couric reported on his(Obama) comment she started the story with Sen. McCain''s name as if Sen. Obama had to defend himself. Shame on you Catie. My vote just change. Sarah Palin and Sen. McCain have my vote. Oh, I''ll no longer watch CBS news.

CBS and Katie Couric are the problems with most of the media these days. They only report one side of the story. They constantly bash the Republican Party and they try to win elections for THEIR party. I thought the job of the media was fair and accurate reporting on both sides. Clueless in Georgia

I am a registered democrate and until the personal attacks on Palin I had planned to vote for Obama, but thanks to Katie Curics constant pounding on this lady I decided to take a closer look. The bridge to no where thing, will she did exactly what every Mother and Wife on a budget does every week. Go after money for the big fish then once it is secured, devide it up into smaller amounts and spread it out to do the things that are really needed. She ends up feeding her family 25 meals on the money that was to go for one big fish and one meal that would have mostly gone to waist. You just don''t get it, even though I know at some point you all have been there.

Katie Couric could not report fairly if her life depended on it. It is so painfully obvious that she is a dem. At least with FOX you get different view points. I think she should join NBC - the number one biased network - where she could put a Vote Obama sign behind her. I would not call Couric a journalist - she just reads the news. There is no fair reporting from her.

Katie, can you please speak up about how comments you made during the primaries are now being used in a new McCain claiming Obama is making sexist comments towards Gov Palin. This campaign is being hijacked away from the issues and they are twisting your comments for that purpose.

"Where They Stand'' was excellent. With all the media frenzy it''s difficult to remember what each candidate brings to the table. This show will certainly help to sort things out! Thank you.
