Katie Couric's Notebook: Hillary's Big Night

She sure won't be the only speaker, but we'll all be listening closely when Hillary Clinton addresses the crowd in Denver tonight. She will surely express strong support for Barack Obama, in the name of party unity.

She has to. That's because he needs her supporters - and she needs to ensure she's seen as magnanamous, and not a spoiler. A lot of Clinton's backers are anxious to hear about her plans for the future, but they'll have to wait: This is Obama's show.

Clinton might get a key position if her former rival wins in November - and she might even run again in four or eight years. That's what John McCain did after losing to President Bush in 2000. Ronald Reagan won four years after a failed bid. Al Gore and Bob Dole were eventually nominated after losing primary campaigns.

For now though, Clinton will have to be content as one of her party's leaders - but not the ultimate leader. She finished a strong second ... but there's no silver medal in politics.
