McCain Distances Himself From Bush As Liberal Groups Release Emotional Spot

As we mentioned in Starting Gate, John McCain's campaign has released a new ad, "Global," that casts the presumptive GOP nominee as having "stood up" to President George W. Bush. The ad, which focuses on global warming, appears designed to appeal to voters disenchanted with the policies of Mr. Bush, whose approval rating stands at 25 percent.

"John McCain stood up to the President and sounded the alarm on global warming – five years ago," an announcer says in the 30-second spot, following a quick-cut montage of emissions from cars and factories. "Today, he has a realistic plan that will curb greenhouse gas emissions. A plan that will help grow our economy and protect our environment. Reform. Prosperity. Peace. John McCain."

Watch it:

Also today, MoveOn.org Political Action and the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees jointly released an ad in which it implies – as many Democrats have – that John McCain wants to keep fighting in Iraq for 100 years. As we outlined here, the Arizona senator suggested in January that the U.S. could maintain a military presence in Iraq for "maybe 100" years. As McCain has repeatedly explained, however, he was talking about a military presence similar to that in Japan or Korea – not the sort of fighting force now in the country.

"Hi, John McCain, this is Alex," a young actress, sitting on a couch with a baby, says in the spot, "Not Alex."

"And he's my first," she continues. "So far, his talents include trying any new food and chasing after our dog. That, and making my heart pound every time I look at him. So, John McCain, when you said you would stay in Iraq for 100 years, were you counting on Alex? Because if you were, you can’t have him."

Watch it:

MoveOn and AFSCME say they will spend $540,000 to air the ad, both nationally and in Ohio, Michigan and Wisconsin, starting tomorrow. They note in a press release that "[p]reliminary testing, conducted by Greenberg Quinlan Rosner Research shows 'Not Alex' ranking among the most persuasive ads the pollsters have reviewed in the last four years."

Strange isn''t it...how Obama picked up on the 100 years statement, when he knows damned well McCain has said he''ll get us out of there as fast he can, just like Obama and Hillary both promised! McCain just isnt willing to throw out a date for and make a promise that he doesn''t know whether it can be kept or not!

Obama will lie thru his teeth for a vote!

Looks like the democrats aren''t above trying to scare the hell out of the public with such an obvious ad with a baby in it!

Is this the CHANGE Obama has been blithering about! Doesn''t look like it to me!

sounds like we have some sore losers commenting. When Obama was being persecuted over a vid of his pastor where was all this righteousness? Everyone knows what McCain wants, the 100 years just reflects his strategy to keep forces in IRAQ to keep the strong arm of the United States in control of other weaker countries. We have more nuclear warheads (894) than all the world combined, yet we want to keep other countries from enriching uranium?

John McCain is a War Monger, maybe those years he spent under enemy combatant control has rendered him into an obsessive intolerant revisionist about his own war experience

If you actually watched the entire ad, then you would know that it was not put out or approved by the Obama campaign.

Conservatives = Spin, spin and more spin.

"If the only thing people can claim is wrong about McCain is that in thier sad and misguided minds they think they are alike, they don''''t even have a good augument."

He flip flops much worse than Kerry ever did, which was one of the biggest negative comments from the republicans, now of course that has changed (another flip flop0); He can keep straight on what he says from one speech to the next; this has been pointed out several times; He admits that he is weak on the economy. I looked up his voting history: during the period 1991 until Feb 2008, he only showed up to vote 44% of the time, less than Obama, and less than Hillary. Do we need a president that only wants to show up 44% of the time?

Serves McCain right. He hammered Romney on a bogus statement that he wanted time tables in Irag. Completely untrue. Now Barack is using the same tacktic. As for Alex, He will be raised to hate the Nation for all the bad things america does to make our lives easier. We don''t need him in the army. Keep him in diapers until he is 30. That way no one will know that he has crapped his pants when he realizes that China, India, and others have surging economies while ours suffocates from beaurocratic ineptness.

When I saw the "Alex" ad I thought ''how wonderful and so fitting'' I don''t agree with what McCain said and I am so glad and happy to hear that the Democrats are not in the fight alone to get our country back. Thank You to any one willing to stand up to the republicans.
