Obama Promises to Visit Iraq and Afghanistan Before Election

(CBS)

From CBS News' Maria Gavrilovic:

(FLINT, Mich.) Barack Obama told Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari on the telephone this morning that he would end the U.S. occupation in Iraq and promised to visit the country before the general election in November.

“I told him that I look forward to seeing him in Baghdad,” Obama said to reporters.

When asked when that meeting would take place, Obama said his campaign will make an announcement soon but that he is interested in visiting Iraq and Afghanistan before the election.

*Obama reiterated that he will not withdraw troops precipitously, but he called the U.S. occupation in Iraq “finite” and said that it will come to a “foreseeable end.” He added that the Iraq war is crippling the U.S. economy and that relief is dependent on withdrawing troops from Iraq.

Obama also called on the Iraqi government to “pick up the tab” for reconstruction efforts.

“As a consequence of a huge spike in oil prices, the Iraqi government's budget is twice as large as it anticipated, and so I think it’s important for the Iraqis to start picking up more of the tab both for reconstruction efforts as well as the need to continue to boost their military capacity,” Obama said.

At a campaign event in Flint later in the day, Obama continued to press for the Iraqis to pay for more of their own reconstruction.

"It’s time to stop spending billions of dollars a week on a blank check for an Iraqi government that won’t spend its own oil revenues," he said.

(*Editor's Note: This post was updated from its original version, which inaccurately indicated that Obama called for a "precipitous" troop withdrawal from Iraq.)

There were no WEAPONS OF MASS DESTRUCTION in Iraq...there shouldn''t be any reason a Presidential Candidate should have to visit there.

The Republican War Mongers will lie about anything to have WAR.

CHEBARKUL TESTING RANGE, Russia: President Vladimir Putin said Friday he had ordered strategic bombers to resume regular long-range patrols as Russian and Chinese forces held their first joint military exercise on Russian soil %u2014 a show of armed muscle aimed at sending a pointed message to the United States.

The resumption of bombing patrols, which analysts say signaled a significant change for Russian military policy, comes amid a growing chill in U.S.-Russian relations, strained over Washington''s criticism of Russia''s democracy record, Moscow''s objections to U.S. missile defense plans and differences over global crises.

Both Moscow and Beijing share a heightening distrust of what they see as the United States'' oversized role and influence in global politics, and the two former Cold War rivals have forged a "strategic partnership" aimed at counterbalancing Washington''s policies.

The Russian-Chinese war games, which took place near the Urals Mountain city of Chelyabinsk, coincided with Russian air force maneuvers involving 20 strategic bombers which ranged far over the Atlantic, Pacific and Arctic oceans.

One of those drills, involving 11 Russian aircraft, prompted NATO member Norway to scramble F-16 fighter jets to observe and photograph the Russian planes as they flew over the Norwegian Sea.

Family `Flown Out`

Updated:09:11, Wednesday September 03, 2003

Note: Bush could`ve held these people until, Osama`s Surrender or capture, but he flew them Home !!

Members of Osama bin Laden`s family were allowed to fly out of the US shortly after the September 11 terror attacks, a senior official has said.

`Bush government sanctioned bin Laden family repatriation`Even though American airspace had been shut down, the Bush administration allowed a jet to fly around the US picking up family members from 10 cities, including Los Angeles, Washington DC, Boston and Houston.

Some 140 high ranking Saudi officials were also on the plane.

The revelations come from former White House counter-terrorism chief Richard Clarke.

He said the Bush administration sanctioned the repatriation of the family in the immediate aftermath of the attacks.

`Repatriation approved`

"Somebody brought to us for approval the decision to let an airplane filled with Saudis, including members of the bin Laden family, leave the country," he told Vanity Fair magazine.

Mr Clarke said he checked with FBI officials, who gave the go ahead. "So I said, `Fine, let it happen`."

He first asked the bureau to check that no one "inappropriate" was leaving.

"I have no idea if they did a good job. I`m not in any position to second guess the FBI," he said.

But Dale Watson, the FBI`s former head of counter-terrorism, said the Saudis "were not subject to serious interviews or interrogations".

McClatchy Newspapers

Obama: But when they were asked how confident they are that the next president will make good foreign-policy decisions, Obama beat McCain in almost every nation, including 72-19 percent in Spain, 82-33 percent in Germany, 52-17 percent in Indonesia and 31-23 percent in Egypt.

Some foreign-policy experts say that preliminary discussions about an Obama visit already are under way.

"I do think he`ll probably come," said John Hulsman, a scholar with the German Council on Foreign Relations, based in Berlin. "He`s going to show he`s a new kind of politician, and to do that you can`t just go to London."

Hulsman suggested that in Iraq, Obama might consider staying outside the fortified Green Zone to show that he wants to see (Real Conditions) and to..

Contrast his trip with McCain`s infamous 2007 tour of an open-air Baghdad market. McCain claimed then, under the protection of Helicopter Guns and 100 U.S. troops, that people could "Walk Freely" there.

Note: In Western Europe, Hulsman said, Obama is "Fanatically Popular. People , they`re Mesmerized by the notion an African-American could be elected president. They see Obama talking and hear (Kennedyesque strains)

Note: Some Obama campaign backers privately acknowledge concerns about him leaving the country now, the argument being why take the risk when he''''s leading McCain slightly in national polls.

RowdyWicca,

The Iraqi oil isn''''t in the hands of the American oil companies, it''''s in the hands of Al Sadr''''s Iranian-backed militias.

First of all those %u201CAmerican Oil Companies%u201D aren%u2019t American at all , but independent Private Multinational Corporations. The Bush Administration%u2019s plan was to have the new Parliament enact a Privatization of Iraq%u2019s Oil Production for a long term 30 year contract between 5 Private Multinational Corporations, that would then sell the oil to the United States at it%u2019s current over inflated price.

The Iraqis aren%u2019t going to give their oil away to Bush%u2019s Private Multinational Corporations. And, of course the Shiites in Iraq are aligned with the ******* in Iran what else could anyone expect after Bush deposed the Sunni Leader Saddam Hussein?

The Untied States need to turn the entire country back over to the Iraqis, and hope that their Oil Production will bring the futures speculation crises back under control. And, then put the $12 Billion Dollars we have been wasting there back into an aggressive domestic energy program.

There were no Weapons of Mass Destruction,
There was no Yellow Cake Uranium sold from Niger to Iraq.
Iraq had no viable Delivery Systems for such weapons, if they had, had them.
Saddam Hussein is dead.
Iraq is costing $12 Billion Dollars each and every month, month after month.

Osama Bin Laden is still not been alleviated.
The Taliban has not only been reconstituted in Afghanistan but they%u2019ve gained
further strength and control.

It%u2019s been 7 years since the 911WTC attack and the Bush Administration has failed
In accomplishing one practical goal due to mismanagement and corruption by diverting
Federal Treasury Funds to Private War Contractors.

We as American Citizens have been conned, swindled, and cheated when it comes to
The Conservative Republicans directing war campaigns.

And, this same group led by John McCain wants to establish yet another military action against Afghanistan and Iraq%u2019s neighboring country Iran. From what we%u2019ve witnessed, Republicans do a lot of tough talk with no results.

wow, how manly of him to finally decide to see what the nation''s true men do every day. wonder if the Iraqis will drool over his crotch like the idiot reporters on his plane. This guy is a joke. He has no idea what he''s doing and will make our country vulnerable to attacks by the same people he has associated himself with in the past--muslims and terrorists.
