Will Obama Appear At Town Hall With McCain Tonight?

(CBS)

From CBS News’ John Bentley:

BOSTON -- John McCain will hold two town hall meetings today, and he’s been asking Barack Obama all week to show up to one of them. But it now appears it will be a solo act.

“I haven’t heard from Sen. Obama, but I certainly urge him again to accept my request to meet me at town hall meetings all over America,” McCain said yesterday. Originally, two chairs were to be placed on stage at Federal Hall tonight in New York City, according to the McCain campaign, but Obama’s camp says it has no intention of travelling to New York today.

“We are happy to do more than the three typical presidential debates in the fall,” Obama said Tuesday. “It's not realistic for us to do 10. We're dealing with all the campaign events that I have to do, since we've just finished our primary election. So it will probably be somewhat fewer than 10, but more than the three that have been already agreed to, and we'll probably propose a mix of formats.”

What that mix of formats will be or when they will take place is still up for debate. As for McCain, he holds a town hall meeting in Nashua, New Hampshire, this afternoon before heading to New York tonight.

Since Obama thinks McCain is old and confused...why is he too scared to debate him without tele prompters? This guy is a wimp.

John McBush - His own words 3 years ago on meet the press

RUSSERT: The fact is you are different than George Bush.

SEN. McCAIN: No. No. I-the fact is that I''m different but the fact is that I have agreed with President Bush far more than I have disagreed. And on the transcendent issues, the most important issues of our day, I''ve been totally in agreement and support of President Bush.

McCain went on to insist that, on domestic policies, he and the president had butted heads - which is true on issues like combating climate change and campaign finance.

"But," he quickly added, "I will argue my conservative record voting with anyone''s, and I will also submit that my support for President Bush has been active and very impassioned on issues that are important to the American people. And I''m particularly talking about the war on terror, the war in Iraq, national security, national defense, support of men and women in the military, fiscal discipline, a number of other issues. So I strongly disagree with any assertion that I''ve been more at odds with the president of the United States than I have been in agreement with him."

Republican members who have NOT endorsed or publicly backed McCain include Sens. Chuck Hagel (Neb.) and Jeff Sessions (Ala.) and Reps. Jones, Peterson, John Doolittle (Calif.), Randy Forbes (Va.), Wayne Gilchrest (Md.), Virgil Goode (Va.), Tim Murphy (Pa.), Ron Paul (Texas), Ted Poe (Texas), Todd Tiahrt (Kan.), Dave Weldon (Fla.) and Frank Wolf (Va.).

Throughout his career in the House and Senate, McCain has been at odds with his party on a range of issues, including campaign finance reform, earmarks, immigration, healthcare, taxes and energy.

Some Senate Republicans were especially irked with McCain%u2019s role in the %u201CGang of 14%u201D deal on judicial nominations.

Rep. Tom Tancredo (R-Colo.), who has been sharply critical of McCain on immigration, told The Hill in February, %u201CI don%u2019t like McCain. I don%u2019t like him at all.%u201D

Tancredo spokesman Mac Zimmerman said Tancredo won%u2019t endorse McCain because he fears the senator would repudiate it like he did with the formal backing of controversial pastor John Hagee.

However, Tancredo told ABC News this week he will reluctantly vote for McCain.

Jones, who has voted repeatedly with Democrats on Iraq, said he can%u2019t back McCain until he gets %u201Ca better explanation of the plans for Iraq and more discussion on the economy.%u201D Jones added that no one from McCain%u2019s campaign has reached out to him.

Yep - Straight talk express, alright. Invite Obama to an "open" town hall meeting. Here''s what even Fox News, who covered the farce, said after: SMITH: "I reported at the top of this hour that the campaign had told us at Fox News that the audience would be made up of Republicans, Democrats, and independents. We have now received a clarification from the campaign and I feel I should pass it along to you. The McCain campaign distributed tickets to supporters, Mayor Bloomberg, who of course is a registered Republican, and other independent groups."

Howard Dean got it exactly right: "Once again John McCain''s campaign is trying to mislead the American people. Senator McCain should understand that after seven years of a President who has divided Americans and pursued a scorched earth policy full of misleading propaganda campaigns, we need a leader who understands he is the President for all Americans not just his supporters. Copying the Bush campaign model of stacking events with his prescreened supporters is not the transparency Americans are looking for. If that is Senator McCain''s idea of straight talk, the American people are in for a long and disappointing campaign season."

If you love being in Iraq, if you love more drilling as an answer to our energy problems, if you love our health-care system, if you love the economy right now, if you love GWB, then vote for John McCain.

Not a fan of Bush, but what is wrong with more Drilling. Its crazy we don''t drill more places. There are other countries drilling 30 miles off of FL coast but we wont let our companies drill their because of some stupid fish.

We could reduce are oil dependency if we would drill and have more oil refineries. I''m not saying that should be are only solution to the energy problem, but that sure would help.

Mattcat25 -----------Right you are, and war with Iran won''t end as quickly as Iraq due to all the advanced weapons we sold them when Reagen was Prez. A prolonged war with Iran with also draw out our economy further and we''ll also have to borrow more $$ from China. How will we pay them off? Dead beat America doesn''t sound good does it now? Not to mention oil supply disruption as a result.

It will remain to be seen if John McCain will be engaging in a room full of gleeful people very satisfied with the misrepresented occupation of Iraq, the many killing of Americans and Iraqis, and, I''m sure the room will cheer the opportunity to $PAY FOR HIGHER GASOLINE PRICES?

John McSame will no doubt have a selected crowd much like George "war monger" Bush has done throughout his Presidency and Campaign runs.

Watch to see if a Republican can really debate a room full of real Americans with real questions.
