Katie Couric's Notebook: "Stampflation"

Today, the cost of a first class stamp goes up a penny, to 42 cents.

Some of us can still remember when mailing a letter cost only nickel ... that was until 1968.

The mail becomes less desirable as email, texting and assorted newer technologies replace its niche in society. Price increases on first class mail just drive people away quicker. On the other hand parcel services are very desirable so I can''t complain too much.
It is not really the increased prices that bugs me but the fact that the increases outpace my ability to use all of the stamps from the prior releases. They have a Forever stamp but they are dull. I like to use comic stamps, John Wayne stamps and animal stamps. They become undesirable with each increase but at the moment I am still holding two pages of the "old" stamps. I guess I should take up writing fan mail to use up all of the stamps before the next increase. So the only question is whether KC would like her fan mail adorned with Wonder Woman or John Wayne. Oh, now that the price is up I guess I should use one of each or it will never arrive.
The purpose of the rambling above? The postal service should make all of the stamps forever stamps and quit causing us headaches.

Who uses the mail anymore anyway, except to send things you can''t email. Bill Moyers, Dan Rather, Peter Jennings, Walter Cronkite(sp). Where''s your depth and analysis? Love your show. BA History Baylor, JD, etc. News Junkie. Nice suits, no more ruffles, that''s good, *** suits are o.k. too. A little heavy on the makeup. Hair out of the eyes shows trustworthiness. You can do it! We love you. Your main audience (sp) is a bunch of over educated middle aged men who don''t have ADD. Tough market to ease into. The rest of the world watches sound bytes on the internet. We crave depth and analysis and some controversy.
