Closing Arguments Continue With Romney, Thompson Ads

Republicans Fred Thompson and Mitt Romney both unveiled new ads today as part of their last-minute push in Iowa, but that's about where the similarities end: While Thompson has taken the standard end-of-the-campaign route with a spot summing up his principles, Romney's ad is only the latest to claim that rival Mike Huckabee's record is inferior to his own.

Thompson's ad is basically a roundup of various endorsements and plaudits from conservative publications and organizations, and it includes praise for his tax plan, his immigration policy (oddly enough, from National Review, which has endorsed Romney), his plan to rebuild the military, and, finally, his support from the anti-abortion National Right to Life Committee.

It then repeats what has been the Thompson campaign's mantra of late – "the clear conservative choice."

On the other hand, the Romney campaign continues to cast Huckabee in a negative light in an ad that's visually similar to past efforts. Some of the contrasts are repeats, too, including mention of Huckabee's support for granting in-state tuition to the children of illegal immigrants. It also quotes Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, who said Huckabee's recent critique of President Bush's foreign policy was "ludicrous."

Conventional wisdom is that Iowans don't care for ads like Romney's especially this late in the game. Then again, some polls indicate Romney has been gaining on Huckabee ever since he started drawing comparisons on air. Only six days until we'll know if his plan actually works.

Fred needs to come in 2nd?

I think Fred has memory loss already, sorry Fred but a 95 old guy doesnt have the energy to run the country. Maybe you meant coming in 2nd from the bottom.

Unless Fred his scripts in his hands, he is just a big Rambler talking in circles. I''''ve never walked away from a speech he gave understanding what he just said.

All the conservatives who first supported him initally should demand immediately he drop out before Iowa. Otherwise all he will do is dilute the votes needed for another candidate with similiar values to go on to win.

If those individuals do not demand Fred to drop out before Iowa, it goes to show they dont have honor, it shows they would rather have the American voters lose than lose their own honor. No one will ever trust them in the future unless they act quick to demand Fred to pull the plug and drop out immediately.

To Giantrobot2: Fred is not too old to be President. He has the experience and leadership abilities. Have you actually heard him speak? No scrips, just straight from the heart. I think your watching a different candidate or you prefer a candidate that has their notes memorized. he is working long days campaigning and seems to be holding up just fine. make sure your looking at Fred and not someone else.

Fred Thompson is way too old. How old is he anyways, from looking at him and hearing him speak he sounds like he is around 90''''s or something.

Can someone that old really have enough stamina and charisma too lead this country? Fred is way too old and extremelly boring. I''''d rather watch paint dry on a wall than listen to his rambling speeches.

Fred Thompson would be better remembered in life if he graciously dropped out of the race before Iowa. People then would remember him in a different way, but if he tries to stay on the ticket, all he is going to do is really embarase himself and be remembered in a negative way.

I think Huckabee''s honesty and ability to deal with international affairs need to be questioned.

Posted today in USA Today:
Stem cell, gun control groups paid Huckabee

Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee last year accepted $52,000 in speaking fees from a biotech giant that wants to research human embryonic stem cells, a non-profit working to expand access to the morning-after pill and a group pushing to study whether tightening gun control laws will reduce violence.
Huckabee opposes embryonic stem cell research, emergency contraception and stricter gun laws %u2014 all of which rank high on the list of deal-breakers for many of the religious conservatives whose support he''s ridden to the top of the Republican presidential field.

Payments came from drug-maker Novo Nordisk, which engages in stem cell research; the Public Health Institute, which works to expand access to "morning after" contraception; and Grant Makers in Health, which is seeking to steer funding to studies of gun violence. The fees highlight the delicate line Huckabee has walked on the profitable speaking circuit.

Huckabee "isn''t afraid to speak to people who don''t agree with his message or personal philosophy," said his spokeswoman Kirsten Fedewa.

Fred doesn''t need to be negative. His ad just reminds people that he is the right person for the job. People of Iowa, show the nation that the Midwest knows a good man when they see one.
Go Fred!

Fred is not just the true conservative, he is the only conservative we can vote for. Fred is coming on strong in Iowa.

Go Fred.

I have high hopes for Iowa. I expect that they will show that they are lot more savvy than the talking heads say. Now that they have really had a chance to look at the candidates, Fred Thompson is really moving up and I can''t wait to see the upset when he wins the caucus and then the nomination.

Of course the Thompson ad states he''s "the clear conservative choice." He''s the only true conservative in the top of the field! Romney changes what he''s for/against depending on who he''s talking to or what he is running for. Rudy is a 911 broken record bragging about his running of a sanctuary city for illegals. Huckabee raised taxes as governor of Arkansas and pushed for illegals to be educated by the Arkansas taxpayers. And Mr. McCain fought hard - for amnesty for the people who don''t respect the laws of the us. Thompson has been a conservative since his years as a young lawyer in Lawrenceburg, TN, and I have no difficulty believing he will be a conservative President of the United States.

Mitt Romney is a phony, the staunch New Hampshire newspaper leader got it exactly right.

Mitt Romney can''t pull the wool over the American people. He thinks he can buy the American voters vote with his gobs of peronal bank account money. Americans have respect and can not be purchased.

Mike Huckabee is out there doing it the old fashion way by earning the respect of the American voters. His honest, humble and trustworthy character connects with the American people. He is a dynamic, charaistmatic speaker who is also funny and warm.

Mitt Romney on the other hand is sooooo phony, him and Fred Thompson are complete phonys. Boring beauracratic money hungry red tape politicians. They want the extreme wealthy to rule over the Americans with an iron fist.

Americans will not let our nation revert to the Kings in the palaces type government who rule with wealth instead of honor.

We spent a year bashing John Kerry for all his flip flops over the years...then when Mitt does it, we write it off as a change of heart. The changes had awful good political timing to be running for president.

The reverend Huck....what can I say...the guy is a complete liberal on everything but gay marriage and abortion. He engages in the same class warfare as John Edwards, calling the Reaganite tax group Club for Growth...the Club for Greed. "Greed" of course being word used to bash Reaganomics for eight years and beyond. Not something someone who has economic plans based in Conservatism usually says. I guess thats why he asked for all those tax hikes.

....And to beat it all, Huck says those who opposed the illegal immigrant amnesty bill did so out of "racism". Now as a conservative, I have a little bit of a sore spot being called a racist...as that''s how most liberals like to portray us unfairly. Now, we have one of our fellow Republicans calling us racist for standing up for the rule of law.

I''ll say no thanks to either...maybe Thompson or Hunter

We do not have to settle for Mitt or Mike. Neither one honestly represents his past and both seem to change their core beliefs as often as the weather changes in Iowa. I''m feel personally violated by Mike''s use of our religious beliefs to bamboozle the people. We can forgive him for lying about having a Theology degree, but we don''t have to support him.
Sen. Thompson got off to a slow start but he has been all over Iowa this month meeting the people and is not letting up. When you are drafted at the last minute by your party''s core because there was no other candidate true to our values, you have a lot of work to do just to catch up. Fred has come through - he is now a serious contender! Let''s get behind the one man in the race that has not pandered to any special interest or bent his principals for political gain. We can shake the system and make a difference!
