Katie: Puppy Love

Katie Couric has a new member of the family. We asked her to fill us in. -- Ed.

(CBS)
It’s official: I should be committed.

Last Sunday, we got a puppy. This brings the dog population at our house to three. We already have a Cairn terrier and a Yorkie. And now we’ve got a little Havanese . My daughter guilted me into it by describing in graphic terms what they do to puppies who are not adopted. It made be me feel so warm and fuzzy that I caved. Now I have a new source for piddle stains all over my apartment. Ah, the joys of giving!

There is a bit of a problem, though: we cannot agree on a name. And we need your help. I’m not saying we’re going to take your help. But we need it.

My first impulse was “Goldie.” As in “Hawn.” Ellie and Carrie came up with Cecilia. (I’m not sure where that came from.) There was a discussion this morning about names from Jane Austen, maybe something from“Sense and Sensibility” or “Emma.” But Eleanor is already Ellie’s name, Mariann just doesn’t fit, (Ginger is a possibility!) and Elizabeth was too formal. But Lizzie is still in the running.

Here are other ideas: my friend Jill suggested Triscuit, but it just makes me hungry. I like Emma. They think Georgy might be a good name, but all I can think of is Lynn Redgrave. I also like Charlotte, but the girls already have a cousin named Charlotte. It could get confusing.

Please tell me what you think. Got a better idea? She’s really really cute – as you can tell from the pictures! By the way, objects in the picture are larger than they appear in real life. She weighs about three pounds right now, and will max out at only 10.

P.S. Don't tell my parents. If they knew, they'd kill me.

How about "Havanother"? (since it is your third dog, and a Havanese breed, obviously.)

When I saw the picture of your adorable new puppy, it instantly reminded me of a good friend's puppy: Hallie, short for Halleluja. I also like Goldie. I had a hamster named Elizabeth once, but she definitely didn't act like an "Elizabeth" Then again, I also had a chinchilla named Preston and an enormous teddy bear named Tiny.

But Yeah, I think you should go with Hallie if that feels right to you. If your daughters question the name, tell them a fifteen year old recommended it(I am 15) Good luck potty training! hee hee

Luvs,
Catherine

It's a testament to my love of all things Jane in that I just registered with your site to offer my Austen inspired names.

Fairfax - a little different, I grant you. But, that could be a good thing. You could always call the little cutie "Jane Fairfax" instead.

Miss Bates - Emma never gave her any respect. Jane Austen would be thrilled that you are.

Mrs. Darcy - this is me doing anything possible to get Darcy's name in the post *loves Darcy*

Bingley - not a very masculine surname to begin with. I think it's a pretty cute name for a little dog.

Lady Catherine - probably not an option since Katie is the shortened version of Catherine...

Asta - not Austen but the name of Nick and Nora Charles' dog in The Thin Man movies of the 30's.

Good luck with naming her. She's a cutie.

Some of your viewers are so disrespectful. If you don't have something nice to say...
Anyway, cute dog. Ours is named Lucie. We also have four cats: Jake, Cosmo, Shadow and Tori.
Then we have two rabbits: Brownie and Oreo; a snake: Sneaky, and two unnamed lizards, not to mention all the fish. I never thought I would live in a home with so many animals. We had a dog who was named Sam, as in Samantha.

Goldie, Ginger and Georgy seem like good candidates, but...

What about Pumpkin? (There are white pumpkins, you know.) Corky? Marble? Savannah? Just some suggestions.

Dear Katie, Isn't puppy love one of the greatest feelings in the world? Your puppy looks adorable and although she may be filled with potential piddles,I'm sure her loving company will be worth it! By the way I need to be committed too.Can I go with you?... Way back when, when I was a small tyke, we had a golden cocker spaniel named Rex, then we had an white and black spotted English Springer Spaniel named Bambi, and then we had a golden, white and black spotted wire haired fox terrrier named Fluffy.Oh ,how I loved those dogs! Is it any wonder that they say a dog is "Mans(and,of course, Womans ) Best Friend? Now,getting back to names, I happen to like your first choice name of Goldie, and I mean that only in the best possible way without any offense to Goldie Hawn, because your little puppy looks so sweet and golden.Otherwise maybe I would choose the name of Fluffy, since your little puppy also looks a lot like my little Fluffy did on a bad hair day. The other names you mentioned might do well also, but I would have to read up some more on the works of Jane Austen to give you some good advice on them.Whatever name you decide, Good Luck! She's adorable! How's that for advice from a big and awkward man? ...as Jane Austen used to say.

How can I resist a puppy naming convention?
We could try a few Spanish choices such as Oro,Amor or Hermoso. How about something using letters from family names for some unusual (unique?) names.
My choice would be Jecka which is usually short for Jessica. However you could shorten it to Jeck when the pup has an accident. More unusual would be Celka which can mean accurate.
However if you want to remain conventional then Goldie is a great choice. I'm sure Ms Hawn would be flattered.
Have fun with the pup!

Well, if it's "piddling" that she's good at, sounds like a perfect name to me! Piddle!! Picture it, she piddles on the floor, what do you say? "Oh, piddle!" She finally get's the art of not piddling on the floor mastered, what do you say? "Oh, piddle outside!". Of course, if you choose not to use profanity when the puppy does something it shouldn't, what do you say? "Oh, piddle!" An then finally, when the puppy is just being too cute for words, what do you say? You got it! "Oh, piddle!" It's a name for all occassions.

How adorable she is .... when I first saw her, I thought of Sophie Tucker, because she has the same face shape....so.....Sophie! It's a lot like Goldie, but has a definite connection to this dog. Look carefully at her face and then a picture of Sophie Tucker....if she has Sophie's personality, then it's a fit! Congrats on your new family member...I have three of my own...but of the feline persuasion! grin
