The state of marriage is deplorable. As a student of theology and of culture, I would attribute the decay of marriage to multiple factors. There is a lack of understanding of the purpose of marriage, a recent shift/delay in adulthood with the so-called extended adolescence, and a lack of commitment - in many areas of the lives of those in my generation, not only marriage. Additionally, the rising divorce rate is a factor.

Marriage is a covenantal relationship not to be taken lightly. Living together prior to marriage, or in place of marriage, aka "playing house" is the archetype lack of committment. It is evidence of relational immaturity. The logic of "trying things out first" proves this. When marriage is understood covenantaly, covenant language applies. The Hebrew translates as follows: One "cuts a covenant." When God and Abram entered into covenant, halved animals were placed on opposing sides of the road. A smoking pot, representative of God, passed through the halves, effectively stating that if God breaks his end of the covenant, let him be like the halved animals. This is a covenant; this is how serious marriage is.

When marriage is not taken seriously, society ends up with high divorce rates, teenage pregnancy, and live-in relationships, and the studies mentioned in the article already showed the effect of live-in relationships on the economy. So whether one agrees with my theological basis for this position, we can still agree on its negative effects. I understand some of the excuses - how hard it is financially as a single young person - I'm doing it, paying for my graduate education, I am not living with my boyfriend or any other men, and I don't have a fabulously well paying job either. Oh, and did I mention I also live in one of Boston's most expensive neighborhoods? It's not impossible. If you're serious about your existing relationship, explore marriage by talking about it, reading about it, and DOING IT, not by playing around with it. If you're not, make a budget.

I know you are anti-bush, i would ask you to remember that you are a reporter and should stay neutral in what you are reporting....your bias makes you look less than the professional. With your obvious biases the CBS News looks more like the "CBS Tabloid News".
