Inside Their Minds, From A Different Angle

Stories that offer a look inside the minds of suicide bombers have frequently been purveyed by the media, often from similar perspectives.

But Arts & Letters Daily has noted an interesting piece in Spiegel Online, a German magazine, that approaches the story from a different angle. The magazine has gathered and examined the obituaries of suicide bombers, focusing on four individuals, that are posted on Islamic web sites. Some examples among the list of 200 obituaries, writes Spiegel:

"Number 114 on the list, for example, is the account of a Saudi businessman 'who wanted to break away from worldly things.' Number 144 had a pregnant wife when he martyred himself. Number 109 is the story of a karate teacher inspired by the speeches of Osama bin Laden."
It offers a revealing view into the motivations of suicide bombers that we haven't seen anywhere else.
