I think that all of our elected represenatives get paid to much and should be made to pay into their retirement packages like the rest of the people in the USA does. If we have to collect SS they should also have to do this!

I know how to save hundreds of thousands of dollars in our budget per yaer. Have everyone in office or the people that have been in office and are retired be made to pay into and collect SS after they retire. Also make these people pay into their own health care plans. As of right now anyone that is in or retired from politics get's to collect their full pay that they were making and recieve full health care and not pay a dime for it. If they happen to die their spouse gets the money until her passing. Why can't these people pay into SS and collect it just like every other citizen has to do. If this happened do you think that SS would be in trouble or would the people on it get pay raises?. All of our Political leaders should also collect what they decide for the public that collect these benefits, they are no better than anyone else. Most of these people are rich after they retire and don't even need the money like some of us taxpaying citizens do! This would be the only fair way for everyone when people when they retire on our tax dollars! They should live and collect and pay into the programs that every other citizen does. after they retire collect their benefits like everyone else does! That would be the only fair way for everyone.

The tea party GOP is full of ignorant, greedy ba@tards. As long as those panderers to the rich are in Congress, the middle class will continue to get screwed. Can't raise taxes on the rich, even though there's no correlation with job creation, but if you want to continue tax cuts for the middle class, got to pay for it (but don't make the rich pay another dime). The GOP is full of the biggest liars and hypocrites on the planet.

Let's be realistic......this is nothing but wasteful spending, which takes funds OUT of SS. It is a stupid thing to do, with retirees coming on line, every day, from the boomers.

The benefit to the individual worker is rather small. Only those actually working pay it. They can afford to pay it.

To extend this payroll tax cut is both stupid, and wasteful, and it basically runs up the deficit, which is already way out of control.

Obama lied to the public, BLATANTLY, when he said his jobs bill was "paid for" as it relied on the millionaire's tax, which is NOT going to fly. He is pushing the same solution to pay for this monstrosity, and that will fail also.

Just let that tax cut expire......it is NOT needed.

Get back to the normal tax rates no write offs, no deduction, and then we can start with deductions all over again, maybe even get the base rate lowered. As long as no one pays the actual tax rate, everyone will think their rate is unfair.

Republicans represent everything "wrong" with this country. Who in their right mind would vote for a party that has worked so hard to destroy the middle class? You can bet that if Republicans were voting on extending tax cuts for billionaires there would be no question that every one of these "rats" would vote yes!

I agree except it's the democrats who have it all wrong with their constant tax increases, nanny laws, endorsement of homosexuality, seperation of church and state, and an emphasis on big government. Their actual history (real history) is one of racism and obstructionism. Now as to the current issue on tax holiday, the republicans are on the right side, just the wrong time. They need to concede this one and make it up later in cutting out the social programs and high taxes that have almost destroyed Europe.

mountainstates Has it right about the wrongs of the republicant party. cwms has it wrong about the left (dems) taxes are at there lowest since the fifties of which the president has helped keep them at. If the rates were at those of the sixties 80/90% maybe the country wouldn't be a debtor nation and all social programs would be fully funded. Nanny laws Ha! any regulations are there to keep corporations in line. or do you like feeding your dog tainted chickjen jerky or how about rotten meat for your kids or go have a glass of river water and see what happens. Homosexuality has nothing to do with money unless your some republickant looking for a good time in a airport bathroom. the separation of church and state. better go back to school and redo your history as that was one of the main goals of the founding fathers. Big government? It only needs to be as big as it needs to be. What do you people think is going to happen? the countries population is going to get bigger and as it does so will government. and yet today our population is twice as big as it was in the fifties and government per capita is no bigger than that of the sixties. The tax holiday needs to be extended for another year and then allowed to expire when the bush tax cuts also do. weather its funded or not. don't forget that the 01 and 03 republicant tax cuts were not funded or covered in any way . and oh buy the way were are all those jobs that that 4 trillion in tax cuts was suppose to create? Pure male bovine anal excrement.

Call me a little strange but PLEASE DO raise my taxes. Somebody has to pay for projects that BOTH parties have gotten us into and for the current national debt.

I vote for who I think will do the best job rather than along party lines but here are a few other ideas to go with raising my taxes...

- The cost of fuel in the US especially in the continental US is WAY TOO LOW. I just returned from a vacation in Hawaii where it was around $4.50/gallon which is the highest I've ever seen it in the US. I also just googled to see how much gas the US uses and it's about 400,000,000 PER DAY.

By comparison, I just checked the price in London and it's equivalent to $9.78525 per gallon. So raise the taxes on gas to be equivalent to an extra $1 per gallon, we still get a relative bargain compared to most of the world. Even if everyone went into conservation mode and only used 2 million gallons per day from now on, that's $146 BILLION per year. If we went the full $5, that's $730 BILLION per year.

- If someone is on unemployment/welfare/whatever, make them work doing SOMETHING and include the more disgusting the job, the better -- more motivation to get a job. I've never met anyone who can't do SOMETHING whether that's cleaning toilets, picking up trash on the side of the road or whatever. This thing of having to apply for 2 jobs per week and that's it and you get hundreds of dollars per week is BS. I know people who INTENTIONALLY stay on unemployment/welfare rather than work at a low-end job because they think they're better than that.

You can use some of the money saved to hire qualified child care even for the disabled so there are very few excuses for not getting off your butt and working.

- Cut out all the extra benefits for politicians. No more working for less than 10 years and then you have healthcare for life, body guards paid for, you don't get to vote laws in that don't apply to you, and you don't get to be a career politician. Once your job is up, you're done just like the rest of us.

- If you can't do the job you were voted to do, then you can be fired (although you should quit) just like the rest of us.

- If you're net worth is more than 5 times that of the average American, YOU CAN'T BE A POLITICIAN. If you're going to create laws that apply to the real people, you need to be one of them. You need to know what it's like to work your ass off.

- STOP BEING THE WORLDS POLICEMAN without compensation from the other countries. I think the military is the biggest single expense we have and there's no need to be that way. By comparison, there are many very nice places (including my next vacation destination -- Costa Rica) that don't even have a military. If the world wants the US to be the enforcer, then we need to be compensated by those who aren't willing to do the job.

Yes, we need a military but it needs to be to protect us and not every other country in the world.

- Corporations DO NOT get a free ride. Say what you will about how doing so creates jobs, but look where most of those jobs are -- they aren't in the US.

- If a country (like China) wants to play this BS with their currency undervaluation, then don't do business with them -- PERIOD.

- Make those getting money from the US EARN it. We give how much to Pakistan and other countries per year and we get what for it?

- Make information about finances public in plain English on the web. I should be able to look up how much we gave Pakistan and why.

"For the economy as a whole, that tax hike would shrink GDP . . . "

That is TOTALLY FALSE.

If a person MAKES $50,000 and is taxed $1,000, or makes $50,000 and taxed $750 - THEY STILL MAKE $50,000 a year which is what is used to determine the GDP. Its GOODS AND SERVICES totalled that makes up the GDP - IT IS NOT deducting taxes on the income THEN using the resulting money left to come up to the GDP - their income is STILL THE SAME.

Is it possible, Taphilo, that you don't understand the multiplier effect? Most income -- especially for someone who makes $50,000 a year -- is spent. That $50,000 a year worker goes out and buys groceries and clothing and brings clothes to the dry cleaner. That puts money in the hands of the grocer and the clothing store and the dry cleaner -- and in the hands of their employees. And those employees and businesses all go out and buy things that keep other businesses operating.

For that $50,000 a year earner, the difference between Obama's broadened payroll tax deduction and letting the current deduction expire isn't $250; it's $1,500. For that worker, having $1,500 less to spend means fewer (or cheaper) groceries, fewer (or cheaper) clothes, and less frequent trips to the dry cleaner. Which means all those businesses now have less income and may need to lay off some of their employees. Multiply the impact on that single worker times 100,000,000 workers who would lose, on average, $1,500, and you've got a major hit to GDP.
