I believe it is inequitable, and that parents who are willing to red shirt their children, DON'T have the faith in their child to begin with.

I have five children. Each child, was treated differently, according to his or her own need. I believed that my children could excel on their own. I didn't not need to red shirt.

I can tell you that the one child who was one of the YOUNGEST kid in her graduating class is one of the MOST successful of her class..she competed on her own!

Parents need to chill out...there is so much more to life than pushing your child....there is ONLY 1% of the kids who attend the IVY League schools....I

I as well heard no speak about where they live, saw no minority parents, (only that minority parents can't afford to keep their children home) not all minority parents would agree. I believe you would get a different spin to that if you inquired their opinions.

When the child obtains the age to attend college or go out on their own, how prepared are these same children? Are they still getting their parents help? Take the survey further....Please note the age of the people doing the survey and tell me what the did or did not include, mainly because they just don't have the experience to know what they may have left out!

I created an account just to comment.
That red-shirt mother is a horrible person - indeed none of the moms did us proud.
An amazing snapshot of why the world has become such a self-centered and I've-got-mine mess.
Shame on all of you Red-Shirters out there
I weep for the current generation of school kids.

I had to repeat the 1st grade but by the 2nd grade had caught up and passed the other children academically. I have read my old report cards and see where I was always being written up for being bored. Being older though, doesn't mean you will be a leader either academically or athletically.

You have got to be kidding me, I wanted my son to go earlier than 5, to have interaction with other children. Children learn more from other children than just sitting home in front of the tv or playstation. So are you going to hold them off at getting a job because of their age?..come on..if you are successful or hard working, did you start school at the age of 6? Get a grip.

Although it was almost 21 years ago before we had heard of "red shirting", we will never regret our decision to wait to have our youngest son start school. With a summer birthday, the youngest of three children, and having ADHD, he would NOT have had much success in starting. I know many children throughout my teaching career that should have waited!
