Well now NYC wants to ban large sodas and another town in this country is charging $20.00 for swearing! Oh and I thought I live in AMERICA home of the FREE! This will not stop kids from getting FAT! This will only produce a black market for the larger sodas. When did this country become a communist country where we are told what to eat and drink and when to speak and ****! I do not care about the FAT kids cause I am NOT their parents. Why should the many suffer do to the uncontrollability of a few kids who's parents do not want to do their job and teach and watch their children. We are all going to have to stand up and stop this infringement upon the rights of the masses! I say these parents of FAT kids should have to take classes or training or bar them from feeding their FAT KIDS all the junk foods and fast foods. Maybe we should put ankle monitors on the FAT kids so that we could track them and see where they go and why they are FAT. Yes the parents will say not not my child yet Why should the PEOPLE of NYC have to suffer for the few who can not control their eating habits or parents not being able to control their FAT KIDS. This is America and we are letting politicians make all these choices and decisions to curb our freedoms. Next they will be telling us what days a week we can and can not shop and what to wear etc... Come on America wake up and stop letting GOV. tell us what we can and can not do in AMERICA!!!!

The Gov of NYC should have lived back in the day when he could have went to somewhere he could have been a communist. What gives this guy the right to dictate what anyone can drink or do in their "personal lives". Stay the heck out of anyones personal choices when it comes to our own health unless you are a Doctor talking to his patient.

sometimes splitting the large drink between two kids, is cheaper than buying one drink each, I think the mayor should stop getting into things that makes life harder for the average New Yorker, and maybe battle something really important like, the ever increasing "The Crack Epidemic". This one thing will fix, a hell of alot more, and make the streets safe again.. amoung other things..

Bloomberg is 100% correct on this one! The ever increasing epidemic of fatness we witness all around us today, not only costs untold amounts of money be spent on otherwise needless medical and hospital care and is the cause of our Nation's decline in health and early deaths, it's actually something that can be corrected. But only if we, the People, en masse take up the banner and go to war against both the two culprits responsible: the Restaurant and Food Processing Industries! Just for the sake of profit, both of them are willing shut their eyes and continue what they are doing to America! Talk about an ethic bred out of corporate psychopathy!

I don't believe the government should be allowed to ban anything that is not illegal. If you have Prostae Cancer they tell you not to eat processed foods, hot house tomatoes, etc. Should they be band? How about if they have a scale on sight, you could weigh yourself and if you are at a good weight you can order the large on if not you will only be allowed to have water. If you also think this won't pass, don't bet on it. If not this, just wait. Those of you that think this is a good idea, do you drive a car, use bug killer, take prescribed medication, burn leaves, drink alcohol, eat fruit or veg bought from a store, etc.? Should all of these be banned because there are health risk with all of these.

Right on, Mike! You are so right. some people have to be saved from themselves. People don't realize how harmful soft drinks are, especially diet. They cause cancer, diabetes and heart disease.

Of course, the food and beverage industry will use silly arguments like the slippery slope. Hogwash. Let's start somewhere. It's gotten way out of control. Of course, wrong doers don't want regulation.

"Some people have to be saved from themselves"?? And of course, you or Mr. Bloomberg apparently think you have the right to save people as YOU see fit. What's next, limiting the amount of bacon or fried foods we can eat? Maybe we should each submit our daily meal plan each day to some authority figure for possible approval.

Certainly obesity is a problem in this country, but I do not think that allowing a dictatorial approach is the answer. If the people of New York allow this man this power, then where will the line be drawn. What will be banned next?

This sounds more like China than America. What about diet soda? Iced tea w/splenda? Are we going to ban hotdogs,Italian and Polish sausage? Lots of fat calories. Are they going to fence the city and have TSA scan for potato chips? GOVERNMENT OVER REACH. Vote the bum out.

This is hardly China. Mike is right on. People are killing (cancer, diabetes and heart disease) themselves with too much soft drinks, diet and non diet.

How about baning ALL processed foods as the crap the food companies put in it is actually the reason for Diabetes (Type 2)!!! Oh but no we can't do that we have to go after everything but!! Anything other than WHOLE FOODS are bad for you so if you want to curb obesity then go back to the way people ate back in the early part of the 1900's and the rate will drop!

BUT the fact is the govenment doesn't belong in my food choices! I would love to see what some of these idiots actually put into their pie holes!! But because they have money and power they feel they are untouchable and they can tell the rest of us how to live! America stands for FREEDOM not do as I say or else!!!

Exempt from the proposed ban are diet sodas that contain fewer than 25 calories per 8-ounce serving, fruit juices, dairy drinks and alcoholic beverages.

I doubt the mayor has frequented very many fast food chains, so he is probably unaware that most have self-serve beverage counter that you can refill numerous time. Fruit juices contain as much sugar as any soda. Dairy drinks? A milkshake has to be way up there in terms of sugary calories. And alcoholic beverages are excluded? This whole thing is just too ridiculous to even be considered.

Where's the ACLU when you need 'em? This is a flagrant violation of personal freedom. Democrats-legislate, legislate, legislate-next it'll be a weight requirement on pregnant women-who knew.
