The study is flawed. The world's population is increasing about 1/2 billion per year and is at 7 billion currently. Assuming the same growth rate (which may also be a flaw) in 18 more years we will add 9 billion more people for a grand total of 16 billion. The study assumes there will be enough food for 42% to become obese. Doubtful. As we print more money our dollar loses its value and we will not be able to afford the increased cost of the little food that is available. Neither an optimist nor an pessimist but a realist.
If you want to use money as the paramount reason to find and explore various solutions to obesity, review the current statistics on the money spent on people who have obesity issues, it is alarming. Look in the broader aspect in the money the government spends in healthcare on the disease processes that are directly related to obesity. Our taxes, a good sum are spent on people who require medical care for this. Is the math so complicated to understand this? I asked one administrator of a business why doesn't the corporation have lap band procedures covered, there answer was that there would be a "run on the bank" for the procedure and would cost the corporation to much money, and there current program of diet and exercise that they offer is currently offered, which he admits that is not working well. I posed the question, "how much money is spent by the corporation providing care for people who have health issues that are directly related to obesity"? The answer could not be answered. We need to quite perseverating on one idea regardless how good it sounds (diet and exercise), and explore other ideas. The world, USA, States, cities, and counties are getting obese, time is our enemy. Wake up!
The obesity situation is alarming. There is no single blame or cause. The issue is way of life and of course money. There are people that are trying the recommended ways to lose weight and as you can see by recent reports, they're not working. So of this is due to the fact that people cannot either afford the programs, or are to overweight the side effects has caused them not to follow through; bad knees, high blood pressure, diabetes, or living in areas that are socioeconomically deprived. There are surgical procedures that have been proven to work for some of these situations to give them a fighting chance to change their cultural loops of eating, and eventually allow them to start the exercise they need. The lap band procedure has been working in Europe and is only available to people in the USA if they can afford it, or if they find some insurance companies who would cover it. Industry needs to encourage these types of ideas, then follow with these cultural templates, and provide the community the assistance they need. Government needs to step up, and encourage the private industry to reach out more than the cheapest way out. We need to realize it will take an investment. After all, we are trying to change a world community that has evolved over many years of bad eating habits. This is possible; people need to all get involved. They're people who in all sincerity want to lose weight.
We have become a culture of "victims" who are blameless for our problems. Blame the fast-food industry because of obesity; heaven forbid people should excercise some self control (or at least excercise). Parents want to befriend their children and give them everthing; what you have done is give them heart disease and diabetes. Kids need to play outdoors and burn the calories; when they get older they will have a body to take them into old age.
"In the coming days at our Weight of the Nation conference, CDC and its partners will emphasize the proven, effective strategies and solutions that must continue to be applied to help make the healthy choice the easy choice." Well ... your "proven effective" low-fat fad ain't proven by science and it ain't working folks! Yes, you: the ADA's, USDA, AMA, FDA, CDC, PETA Et Al ... Time for a new (Or Old) approach! Go Paleo or cross-fit -- eat real food like meat our ancestors actually did it, they consumed nothing processed. Don't follow the Gov "Food Pyramid" it's just like the one used to fatten up a steer or pig in a feedlot!
How's this: If the fat Far Righters won't pay for my son's pre-existing heart defect nor my birth control then why oh why do I have to pay for their "lifestyle" obesity?
